That's not even the half of it. According to FDNY, there are plenty of service additions to be made next month.

And why do you need a schedule? The S55 is going to run every 30 minutes instead of every 45 minutes, so it's schedule will look like the S54's schedule.

And then the S89 is going to run rush hours only...every 15 minutes in the peak direction (ex: SI-Bayonne;Morning) and every 30 minutes in the reverse peak direction.

NYCTA buses are not allowed by law on Todt Hill because they would lower property values. Too steep an incline off of Richmond Road for any local bus to handle anyway. But I have seen private coach-style buses take the incline. Todt Hill is too upscale an area, only the maids and butlers would use the bus anyway. (Seriously though, the lack of sidewalks on Todt Hill Road has caused fatalities.)

It states that "for a period of 100 years hence public conveyances of any sort, whether they shall be beast-drawn, electric-traction, steam-traction, human-traction, manure cart or other carriage shall be prohibited from any roadway or turnpike where a majority of property owners have deemed in petition to the Board of Alderman that such public conveyances are a nuisance. The S89 should have been a proper express route with MCI equipment. It's as if the MTA wants it to fail by making it unattractive to commuters. If you work in Manhattan, you get a coach bus, if you work in Jersey City, you get to ride a local bus, then change to a trolley car. Better off driving to Jersey City.

They should at least use buses with suburban seating, but really, they should use MCIs. If TOR could charge $1.50 for the Tappan ZEExpress and Liberty Lines could charge $1.75 when they used to have MCI 102A2a on the 17 and 77. then the MTA should use be able to charge $2.00 for the S89.

Off-topic: Does anybody think MCIs should be used on the X25, X32, and X90?

Howard Avenue at Clove Rd is just as steep as Todt Hill Road at Richmond Rd..so the buses would be able to accomplish that hill.

And then you have the S46 that traverses the steep hill along Castleton Avenue between Jersey St and Cebra Ave which then winds up, right, left and down until Brighton Ave.

But the steepest hill of them all is the one that lies at Beach St & St Pauls Ave that the S52 has to climb, when you're on the bus, you can feel it sliding back a bit. I don't know how those Orion Vs make it up that hill.

The Orion Vs are ok..but I think it's more of the fact that they're Yukon's buses that makes it all the worse. They go so slow across the Verrazono..so I can only imagine how slow it's going to be on the Route 440 stretch.

I agree, but I don't see that happening. I think the route will already fail simply because of the dismal local buses it will be using, they're very unimpressive in comparison to the MCI coaches in the same depot.

I was thinking about trying out the new route as an alternative to get to my job that Monday but..the many different modes of travel are throwing me off. First, I would have to ride the S44 to the foot of the Bayonne Bridge (30-40 minutes). Then ride the S89, (probably about 10 minutes), after that comes a ride on the HBLR to Pavonia-Newport (about 35 minutes), and finally the PATH ride to 33rd St (20 minutes)..where I'll have to transfer to the Broadway BMT to take that up to 5th Avenue (10 minutes).

They should use MCIs or at least Orion Vs with suburban seating for the S89.

And for the X25/X90, I don't think MCIs should run on them. They're fine with the Orions. I hope when the useful life of those few MJQ Orions are done, they're replaced with standard buses with the same type of seating. I used to live with someone in Yorkville to get to my old job at the World Financial Center Shops and take the X90. Nice ride. Just like all express buses though, it was full of people with a holier-than-thou attitude (got many staredowns from people in business suits cause I was in my Eckerd uniform).

The X32, as far as I know, isn't allowed to use MCIs, so the current setup is just fine.

The seat problem on the Yukon O5s are fixed, but the operators still managed to cut the door cords and now that the bell tapes are connected again, the operators lock out the bell so that they don't ring...

Wasn't Yukon supposed to install boxes around the door cords so that operators wouldn't cut them? And isn't it illegal for the operators to lock out the bell (aka they HAVE to have the bell switched on?)

I have further bell comments, but I'll save that for a separate post.

I have been reading the accusations of stop request tapes being vandalised by Yukon operators for some time now. Where is the proof? Has anyone seen an operator acually do this? Based on all the photos on this site, I thought that the accusers could back the accusation up with a photo. Plus, if a bus goes out with working tapes, then when it comes back with them vandalised, then NYCT can narrow it down. But then, how do we know that the "customers" aren't doing it? If an operator is suspected of this vandalism, wouldn't NYCT send out beakies to ride with said suspect?

I know for a fact operators at both LIB and Staten Island Depots cut the rear door cords leading from the tapes to the controls. There have been eyewitness reports for that, and that's why there has been a crackdown at LIB (heard there was a major driver shuffle, probably due to this) plus the rear doors have been gradually being fixed correctly (no more electrical tape and exposed wiring in an attempt to fix them.

The fixing process seems to have gone through at Yukon since everything else has been fixed, from what I heard, but every Yukon bus I've been on lately has had the cords cut. I still have yet to find a bus with a box around the cords, as I heard they would install.

I know the stop request tape have been fixed and covered with a box around the cords, but in two separate buses I've been on, the operator has the bells locked out, and one actually admitted to keeping them off (after I asked him to turn them on) because "they slow [him] down." I don't know what he meant by that, but most likely if he misses more stops, he finishes his trip faster? I don't know.

Why can't operators like that think about the passenger? I'm sure many a Staten Island passenger has missed stops due to this problem, and were probably yelled at by the driver ("You didn't yell, so I didn't stop!" or something like that). I really hate drivers with that mindset, by reversing the blame for anything that goes wrong.

Well, I'll crack it down for you abit. Starting from 34th Street HBLR, that should be 20 to 25 minutes, 21 minutes on a Bayonne Flyer. The PATH to 33rd should be 15 minutes. Then the (N),(R),or (W) to 5th Ave which should be about 15 minutes.

Yukon is still a hit or miss. I rode three different Yukon buses (2 O5s, 1 Nova) on the S44 today and they were all misses. The seats were grimy, the windows were scratched, bells not working, graffiti on the buses...and to my surprise, #9699..which just got sent to Yukon had broken bells today.

He's more likely to get a good lump sum for selling the route. The 144 is going downhill. His buses come late regularly, he contracts the route, and because of his poor performance, he's getting competition from the MTA.

Are we taking the stop request tapes or the tape by the rear door which allows the rear door to open when the customer pushes it? If the latter, I've read in the past that the operators cut it when the rear door is not closing properly thereby avoiding having to take the bus out of service. In this case, they are doing you a favor by keeping the bus in service.

There are quite a few Yukon Orion Vs that have had their seats replaced, windows replaced and the boxes put over the cords but they're very few in the fleet of a 100+.

The 6:15pm S44 bus that I rode yesterday..a #952x Nova.had it's bells disabled, even though it was just sent to Yukon. I looked at the back door..and noticed that the cord was snipped. The passengers on the bus were very distressed and baffled by that..and the bus driver ended up flying right past quite a few stops.

Umm...Bill......I don't think all 300 local buses on Staten Island have broken rear doors.

I'm not exactly sure how the MTA is going to be any better, because what you said about the 144 can equally describe many local routes on Staten Island.

Those that Coach USA bought are mostly assigned to Gray Line New York, however. They had been assigned to ONE Bus and Rockland Coaches.

I'm still not convinced that the operators are doing the vandalism, rather the school age kids are doing it.

If the operator was doing that, then you should have reported the operator by calling (888) NYCT-BUS. Alternatively, you can just shove the back doors if the bus blows by a stop that was requested, which will trigger the brakes if done hard enough.

I didn't say they were, but some rear doors, at least here at FP on the RTS', open when you push the yellow tape, others do not work and you have to manually push the rear door open.

I doubt it, very much. The lack of maintenance at Castleton and Yukon Depots is very blatant, I don't think it can be any more clearer. Just take a few trips down to Staten Island the next time you get a chance, you'll be surprised at the crap local bus fleet that's actually allowed in service.

There hasn't been one bus I've been on, out of Castleton or Yukon that has had working rear doors in years. And Staten Island has at least a good 200+ Orion Vs, and they all have their rear door cords snipped or they are in that black box above the rear door but still disabled. The Yukon Novas were sent over with the rear doors in tact but were eventually disabled. The only fleet that still has working rear doors is the newer #96xx batch at Yukon..but just give it a little time.
