Original q30-31 routing

Posted by sloth on Tue Sep 21 10:42:06 2021, in response to Re: Q66 Bus Stops Discontinued Every 4 Blocks Or So., posted by Snilcher on Tue Sep 14 21:13:35 2021.

Do you know exactly when the 30-31 were taken off of Fresh Meadow Lane? I found a 1958 map showing them using FML on both sides of the as-yet unfinished LIE, which was completed thru the area sometime in late 1959.
I grew up north of the highway along that route and it is hard to imagine a bus route along that narrow and twisty road. Plenty of spots where two buses couldn't pass each other.

According to the Motor Coach Age Queens issue (April-May 1977) the Q-17A (today's Q-30) was re-routed via Utopia Parkway as of July 15, 1974. There is no mention of the change in the Q-31 description but it must have been on the same date.

Actually, the 1965 timetable map shows the Q-31 running on Utopia Parkway both ways while the eastbound Q-17A turned off Utopia onto Fresh Meadow Lane to Horace Harding. Westbound it ran from Horace Harding to Utopia to 64th Avenue to 174th Street then onto Fresh Meadow Lane and back to Utopia. It's surprising that this awkward routing lasted as long as it did.

Yes, that was how I remember it from around 1968 or so when I rode both routes; the Q17A still had the Fresh Meadow Lane routing while the Q31 was fully on Utopia Parkway. It would have to be, since only Utopia had an LIE crossing and FML did not. Any routing of the Q31 on FML would have had to be prior to LIE construction.

Thanks for your answers gentlemen. I looked at the 1951 aerial map and Utopia Pkwy doesn't seem to exist yet between 56th Ave and Horace Harding Blvd. The south side routing lasting until 1974 is a little bit mind boggling.

Do you have any maps earlier than 1951? It may be that an even longer stretch of Utopia Parkway didn't exist. That might shed some light on the lack of bus service along UP between 26th Avenue and 46th Avenue, besides the fact that UP is considerably narrower in that region (something I noticed while riding on Northern Blvd.).

(In light of your observation, the name of the parkway seems appropriate.)

I went back to the 1924 aerial and there are very few ways of crossing the LIRR that would have been available. To the west of Fresh Meadow Lane, there was 162nd Street. To the east, 192nd Street and Francis Lewis Blvd, neither of which ran south of Northern. I'd guess the LIRR bridge at Utopia post-dates the 31. Maybe someday I'll have a few hours to check the build dates on the PW branch bridges in eastern Queens.

There are a few fragments of that stretch of Utopia shown on the 1924 map, but I see nothing between 37th and 42nd Aves, and nothing south of Northern.

Or have a branch of the Woodhaven local route (which I would still split between Lindenwood and Old Howard/Hamilton Beach) run up 63rd Drive to connect with the Q72.

But honestly it's not a long walk from QCM over to LeFrak.

I rode the Q66 a few months ago. The problem with that bus are not the number of bus stops, but the terrible pattern of red lights. A whole bunch in a row turn red and green at the same time, and red light intervals last too long for the cross streets.

MTA Planers are grasping straws.

I thought that, a long time ago, Northern Blvd. was the first thoroughfare in NYC (or maybe Queens) to implement controlled traffic lights to expedite traffic. It sounds like the opposite is happening now.

It depends on the time of day and the direction of traffic. In the morning rush on Northern Blvd the lights are sequential going west-bound, so if you're going east-bound you'll have to stop very often, since the sequence is against you. After the morning rush, the lights are "balanced", with groups turning red at the same time, so both directions have the same timing. In the evening rush the sequence favors the east-bound traffic, so if you're going west-bound you'll stop very often.

Even going in the favored direction, buses can't often take advantage of the sequence because they have to stop at the bus stops in addition to the red lights.

On Queens Blvd, which has the same arrangement, one evening I once drove from 48 St to 63 Dr without stopping once, maintaining 30 mph speed all the way and making every light in sequence.

The Manhattan one-way avenues are always sequenced correctly for their one-way traffic, and it's possible to drive long distances without stopping by maintaining the correct speed (if traffic allows).

I'd say the out of state transplants are more important to politicians today than NYC homeowners of all racial, ethnic or socioeconomic background. Out of state transplants are easier to control than homeowners as they can easily campaign on national issues like social justice and resisting Trump and get votes while politicians real estate industry and other donors can do as they please. Can't do that with outer borough homeowners.

Some drivers actually liked Rikers before vision zero and 21st street being messed up for a bus lane that benefits no one. One operator once told me it’s “express without the city” outside of visiting hours and even the visitors don’t bother drivers as long as the drivers mind their own business. I know of some operators under Queens Surface who would use cell phones while driving the Q101R and get away with it.

The purpose of the bus lane wasn’t to improve bus travel it was for “traffic calming.”
