Spring 2017: M79 SBS and Q52 new southbound extension

Posted by gold_12th on Fri Jan 20 16:25:51 2017

Summary of M79 SBS:

SERVICE CHANGES: IMPLEMENT M79 SELECT BUS SERVICE
Service Issue
The M79 corridor serves nearly 14,500 average weekday riders. The current M79 route
provides crosstown service along 79th Street in Manhattan connecting dense residential
neighborhoods and providing direct connections to:
 79th Street 1 subway station
 81st Street BC subway station
 Nearby 77th Street 6 subway station
 Several bus routes along the corridor
 Metropolitan Museum of Art
 American Museum of Natural History

In recent years, the M79 has experienced significant delays and a lack of reliability leading
to an ongoing ridership decrease.

Recommendation
Implement M79 Select Bus Service (SBS) on 79th Street in Manhattan replacing M79 local
service at all times.

Budget Impact
Approximately $1.73 million. This amount includes costs for fare machine maintenance,
security, revenue collection, and bus service. This is included in the approved operating
budget.

Proposed Implementation Date
Spring 2017

------------------------------------------------------------

Summary of Q52 southbound extension

SERVICE ISSUE:
The Q52 provides limited-stop bus service on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays between Elmhurst
and Arverne in Queens via the Woodhaven and Cross Bay Boulevards. The southern terminus of the
Q52 is currently at Beach 67th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

Community members and local elected officials reached out to MTA Bus to request that the Q52 be
extended east of its current terminus to better serve the dense residential neighborhoods east of its
current terminus.

RECOMMENDED SOLUTION:
To provide improved transit connectivity for the dense residential areas of Arverne and Edgemere in
the Rockaways in Queens, and respond to community requests for additional transit service, extend
the Q52 east from its current terminus at Beach 67th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard to a new
southern terminus at Beach 54th Street and Beach Channel Drive.

ESTIMATED IMPACT:
The net result of the recommended extension to the Q52 would be an increase in operating cost of
approximately $510,000 annually. Provision for this cost has been included in the operating budget.

PLANNED IMPLEMENTATION:
April 2017

The Q52 route extension is not exactly what the Rockaway community had asked for as the community wanted the Q52 route extended all the way to Far Rockaway - Mott Avenue. Another big disappointment!!!

Do you know what the planned routing and stops of the extension? Thanks.

I don't know what the problem is extending transportation to Mott Avenue. Went through the same thing with the complimentary shuttle bus for the city-wide ferry service. Their initial plan was to have the ferry go as far as Beach 67th St. Here we again. After raising hell, they finally extended it to Beach 35th street, not to Mott Avenue.

A map is contained in the appropriate section of this file.

East/southbound: Continue on Rockaway Beach Blvd to Beach 62nd, then shift to Arverne Blvd to go to Beach 54th. Up to Beach Channel Drive to terminate.

West/northbound: Start up at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 54th, use Beach 59th to get over to Rockaway Beach Blvd to join existing route.

Seems the concern is to completely encircle the apartments in question and maybe to serve Beach 60th St station (though who would want to change from the Q52 to the A there)?

Interestingly, if the Q52 ever does get extended to Mott Av, there may still be lack of uniformity with the Q22 as they have clearly doubled down on having the two routes at variance with each other, even along their existing spans, much like the Q22 and Q35. I guess having two routes running parallel to each other continues to be the preferred practice on the peninsula, rather than having them together.

I haven't been around the area lately but there sure seem to be plenty of residents that still stand to benefit from this humble extension. They would also be riders without first choice of seat if the bus came from Mott Av.

And as I said in a different reply, it seems that the current thinking is not to have the Q52 and Q22 work together.

Thank you so much for the information. As far as the routing and stops on Beach 59th and Beach 54th Street that was done to serve several apartment complexes. At Beach 54th Street, you have the Ocean Bay Apartments and two smaller NYCHA apartment buildings. At Beach 59th Street you have Arverne View Apartments, Nordeck Co-ops, Waters Edge Condominiums and private homes as well as the easternmost part of Arverne by the Sea (Beach 62nd Street).

Furthermore, Beach 59th Street is the only access to the "swimming" beach in that area. Beach 67th Street beach access is for surfing and sun bathing only.

You're probably right about them not wanting the Q22 and Q52 working together, which is ignorant on their part if that's the case. The Q52 would not have to follow the Q22 route to Mott Avenue. It could follow the old Q21A route by taking Beach Channel Drive straight to Mott Avenue. The bay ends at Bay 32nd Street meaning that part of Far Rockaway is part of the mainland. There is absolutely no bus service north of the subway tracks from Bay 32nd Street to Mott Avenue. In fact, at Beach 25th Street station, the Q22 is several blocks south. That community could definitely use the bus service.

I'm interested to see the way this goes. I doubt that they are finished tinkering with the Q52/53 and related Woodhaven Blvd routes.

If Woodside to Rockaway Park works as a service, then I'm sure Elmhurst to Far Rockaway is a distinct possibility, assuming Woodside to Far Rockaway is just too much for reliability concerns.

I think you're right about the tinkering with the routes. AFAIK, the plan is to keep the Q52 originating at Elmhurst. I hope it stays that way. Sending it to Woodside would be a disaster. Time will tell.

They could even have it cover some of the old Q22A route in Bayswater (I know it was just a trip each way). Go up Bay 32nd/Beach 32nd/Norton Drive to Bayswater Avenue and continue down to the Far Rockaway station.

BTW, correct me if I'm wrong, but the old Q22A wasn't operated as a loop route was it? In the morning, the 8:03AM trip terminated at Mott/Dunbar, and the 2:52PM trip (I believe it was) began at Mott/Dunbar and headed back to the (A). You couldn't ride around the loop from Far Rockaway to Mott/Dunbar and back, could you?

You're speaking my language as far as routing the Q52 thru Bayswater, but that will never happen.

I can't answer your question about riding the Q22A. What I can tell you is that when I moved out here in the '70s, the Q22A ran Monday through Friday from approximately 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. It's bus stop was right in front of the Thriftway Drug Store along with the Q21A and a 3rd bus line. I think the third bus line was operated Peninsula Bus Company.

How about alternate buses another words some Q53 bus terminate at Elmhurst and some Q52 buses terminate at Woodside. This would gave Q52 passengers access to other bus connections such as to the Q70SBS. I would also like to see all Q52 and Q53 buses travel up 63rd Drive to serve the Rego Park Shopping Center (sears/Bed Bath etc.). These two bus routes could then take Junction Blvd. (stopping near to the Century 21/Costco Shopping Center) then take to 57th Avenue (w/b)/59th Avenue (e/b) back to queens Center in Elmhurst. It would also be a faster bus to subway connection at the 63rd drive Subway Station as less walking would be required. The current Woodhaven Blvd. Slattery Plaza Subway Station has much walking to access the subway platform then at the 63rd Drive Station.

What if Woodside was served by the Q11/21? The Q52/53 are long enough even ending at Elmhurst. Do people still take the Q53 from end to end?

Overnight, however, there may be more of a need for the Q53 to be as long as it is, but that's a universal situation that longer-distance runs are preferable at night when buses are infrequent and there isn't much traffic.

Also, not sure of the union / depot issues with replacing an ex-Triboro segment with an ex-GBL route.
