April 29, 1939 - the Bronx Whitestone Bridge is opened to traffic. Soon afterward (probably that summer0 the North Shore Bus Company's Q44 Main Street route was extended into The Bronx using the new bridge. In 1947 the route became part of the NYC Board of Transportation Queens Bus Division, today part of NYC Transit.

Prior to the MTA takeover of both the NYCTA and the TBTA, passengers traveling over the Whitestone Br had to pay a 5 cent surcharge in addition to the regular fare. Passengers going over the bridge would pay the regular fare plus 5 cents and would receive a receipt from the bus operator upon entry. At the last stop prior to crossing the bridge, the operator would collect the receipts and although I’m not exactly sure, I believe he gave them to the toll taker as the toll for crossing the bridge. AFAIK, when the MTA and TBTA were absorbed under the MTA umbrella, the surcharge was removed. NMYCTA employees traveling on passes were exempt from the surcharge and would merely redisplay their passes when the operator collected the receipts.

The 5 cents surcharge was eliminated when there was a fare increase. Queens Transit (not part of MTA) also had the surcharge. And the receipts were not given to TBTA toll collectors. Surcharges were also eliminated on other bus routes with zone fare: Jamaica Buses Q 112 to Far Rockaway, Green Bus Lines Q 60 to Manhattan, Triboro Coach Q 53 to Rockaway Beach and Command Bus Q 110 to Downtown Brooklyn.

Thanks for the info. I wasn’t sure exactly how that works. By the way, if I recall when the TA fare went up from 15 to 20 cents, the 5 cent surcharge was retained so I’m not sure which increases caused it to be eliminated. It wasn’t until sometime after the fare increase in 1966 that I rode the Q44 again and by that time I was a TA employee so I didn’t have to pat anyhow.

I think the zone fares were eliminated when the fare went up to 30 or 35 cents in the early '70's. BTW I remember when there were TA employees who collected the nickel fare at the last bus stop before it went over the bridge. The passenger has to insert the nickel in a hand held device. Also, I do not recall a bridge surcharge on the Triborough or Verrezano Bride bus routes.

The part about the collectors at the last stop before the bridge is interesting since I never got on at either of those stops. I wonder if it was worthwhile to have additional employees stationed at those stops unless the TBTA reimbursed the TA for their wages.
