Prior to the MTA takeover of both the NYCTA and the TBTA, passengers traveling over the Whitestone Br had to pay a 5 cent surcharge in addition to the regular fare. Passengers going over the bridge would pay the regular fare plus 5 cents and would receive a receipt from the bus operator upon entry. At the last stop prior to crossing the bridge, the operator would collect the receipts and although I’m not exactly sure, I believe he gave them to the toll taker as the toll for crossing the bridge. AFAIK, when the MTA and TBTA were absorbed under the MTA umbrella, the surcharge was removed. NMYCTA employees traveling on passes were exempt from the surcharge and would merely redisplay their passes when the operator collected the receipts. |
