The shortest bus trip I ever made with any regularity was probably whatever the hell bus route runs up Broadway, NYC, from ~92 St to 96 St. I think I also would ride the M96 between Broadway and Columbus. |

I was about 10 or 11 and Mom had sent me to the supermarket (you could do that in the mid 70s). Just as I got finished with checkout, a heavy thunderstorm rolled in. I was wondering how to get home when I saw the TNJ 78 (now NJT 178) less than a block away. I took the bus fare (40 cents then) out of the supermarket change and dashed to the bus stop next to the store with a full bag of groceries. Got on and rode all of a half-mile to the stop by home. I walked in surprisingly dry, and Mom asked how that was possible. I laughed and said "I took the 78, it had just pulled up - hope you don't mind me taking the fare out of the change." She said "Not at all!" and praised my quick thinking. |

Even though I don’t mind walking, I sometimes do that for short trips if I see a bus coming in order to save time since the bus can usually make it faster than my feet. As an aside, I recall in the old Surface Transit days in the Bronx, the Xtown lines would make a stop on each side of the Concourse. I had often been tempted to board a bus on one side and ride just the one stop to the other side. |

This had me thinking of which stops in the city on the same route have the least distance between them. (There might have been a thread about this here some years ago, but I haven't yet found it.) The closest I've seen in person were Avenue N and Kings Highway on the southbound B44 local with ~50 yards between them, roughly equivalent to half a city block. But while Avenue N still has a stopcode (303487), I see from Google Street View that its sign was moved even closer to Kings Highway, so much so that it's hard to believe buses are stopping at both places since they're practically on top of each other. Can anyone confirm that this stop was de facto eliminated? |

For that trip, I got on at what's now Walgreens at Teaneck Road and State Street (was a supermarket back then), and got off on the first block of Forest Avenue where the 78/178 turns off Teaneck Road.Also, that was an overlapping zone situation on the 78 - the boundary was officially Teaneck Road and State Street as it is now, but if you got on in Teaneck, it was considered one zone if you got off in Teaneck. So I could ride from Teaneck & Forest over to my doctor's office on River Road for a one-zone fare... but Hackensack was a two-zone trip. |

In an October 2013 capture there's a sign for the Avenue N stop in front of Dentique.  A year later, in an October 2014 capture, the bus stop signage is gone and replaced by parking signs.  This October 2013 capture shows only one bus stop sign in front of CVS, at the far left.  A year later, in this October 2014 capture, there are *two* bus stop signs in front of CVS. There is one on the left and one on the right.  You can also see both signs in front of CVS in this Bing Maps Streetside image dated 8/21/2014.  The sign on the left reads "B44 Sheepshead Bay Nostrand Av & Kings Hwy." The sign on the right reads "B44 Sheepshead Bay BM4 Drop Off Only Nostrand Av & Av N." Like I said, those 2 stops were very close together, and now they are even closer together such that it's hard to believe buses are stopping at both places. |

East 35th St and East 36th St on the B2 toward Kings Plaza, and both stops on Ave R (not separated by a turn). And it's extremely common for both stops to be made.Although there are closer ones (like the aforementioned B44 by Kings Hwy), I think this one on the B2 is unique because it's completely residential. Not a single store or meeting center on that avenue. |

How would you feel about all bus stops being a quarter mile apart as some have proposed?I'm starting to think that the European approach of bus stops that are set far apart works because more stuff is within walking distance so one doesn't use the bus for short distance trips, bikes (or scooters) take up much of the load of those short distance trips, and their old people are probably in better shape, so walking a quarter of a mile to a bus stop doesn't seem like a horrible idea. In contrast, in New York, we view cyclists as weirdos, and people demand stops to avoid walking far in the first place. |

According to my mother, prior to WWII bus and streetcar stops were every block. To conserve fuel during nWWII, bus stops were changed to every 2 blocks and recently although I’m not sure of the exact year, the average distance between bus stops was changed to the current every 3 blocks I suspect also to conserve fuel. With the interests of senior citizens and the disabled, I can’t see the distances between bus stops being increased any time soon if at all. |

Ih Philadelphia, when PTC ran it, or even PRT, trolleys ran every thirty seconds, and stopped at every street corner, so all you had to do was walk up to the stop and a trolley would be in sight.Our bus stops are almost every block. There are some exceptions.Senior citizens, need as many stops as possible, as Randyo alluded to in his post. |
