Shortest I made was as a kid in Teaneck. I was about 10 or 11 and Mom had sent me to the supermarket (you could do that in the mid 70s). Just as I got finished with checkout, a heavy thunderstorm rolled in. I was wondering how to get home when I saw the TNJ 78 (now NJT 178) less than a block away. I took the bus fare (40 cents then) out of the supermarket change and dashed to the bus stop next to the store with a full bag of groceries. Got on and rode all of a half-mile to the stop by home. I walked in surprisingly dry, and Mom asked how that was possible. I laughed and said "I took the 78, it had just pulled up - hope you don't mind me taking the fare out of the change." She said "Not at all!" and praised my quick thinking.
