PATH Herald Square line doesn't cut through much of a major employment center. I agree though that the E serves the employment area on the east side better than the 7.

When you consider that the most significant development in Manhattan taking place right now is Manhattan West, and the Hudson Yards this will not be a true statement much longer.

I'd say the 42nd Street and 53rd Street corridors are about co-equal.
Trouble with the E is that its backloads at both 34th and 42nd, and there is nothing that anyone can do about that.

At least the #7 starts at Times Sq (or soon at Javits). It's rail (LIRR & NJT via Times Sq) and NJ bus commuters got on a nearly empty train. Not true with the E.

How much is commercial and how much is residential?

Most folks coming from NYP are getting the shuttle anyway. And yeah, the E is a nightmare in both directions from midtown east during rush hour (have you ever seen the Platform at Court Sq during morning rush!?). Still, that's an issue to deal with on the Manhattan side. On the Jersey side of it, we still have these bus routes that have demonstrated a need for a higher capacity solution. That's why I'm thinking more commuter rail tunnels into NYC is the best option over an expanded or relocated PABT. And if most of the midtown west development is commercial, NYP will be that much more convenient for more people. And downtown is still a viable option.

Manhattan West is about 4 million Sq ft of Comm, including total rehab of 450 w 33rd Hudson yards has about 6 million sq of comm.
I'll try and break down the projects better and update the figures after I sort through some of the so called mixed use stuff, and sift out hotels vs residential. These are 2 big developments, it will be interesting to see how people who live there get to work, and how people who work there get from home. The #7 extension will terminate at the opposite corners of these sites.

I wish there was a website that showed a map of all the different development projects going on in the city (or even the entire metro area), with details like sq ft of commercial, sq ft of residential, etc. It could be an interesting way of following what neighborhoods are really booming. Until I started reading some of the websites about development, I didn't realize just how active Flushing was.

What you are saying is very relevant. The city has a history of developing first, figuring out how to move people later. Where people go after they arrive at a major terminal is very important. NYC upzoned and drastically increased the density on the East side North of Grand Central, 40 years later ESA is a few years away. We failed to build the 42nd and 10th station on the 7 extension, that will bite us in the butt someday.

Not that difficult to figure out why - developers can move more quickly to build residential buildings on their own land when they smell demand. The city has to answer to the public, and infrastructure projects like building rail tunnels are more likely to have an immediate, mostly negative impact on them and their property.

But when the city zones an area for further development, the work should be started right then to improve that areas transportation. They almost got it right with the far west side, but blew it by not building 10th Av

It's not just the city. The suburbs have been doing the same thing, hence why we have this problem of congestion at the Port, the Lincoln, and NYP. The infrastructure was built to accommodate what was relevant at that time and no new major addition has been done since.

Collecting the money, getting over the bureaucratic hurdles, and beating back community opposition (i.e., NIMBYs) is a lot longer and harder for a transportation line than a building. Plus, the profits and benefits for a building are easy to visualize; not so much for transit line, esp. since it will be paid with taxpayer dollars.

Bloomberg encountered fewer problems because he was able to get the money to an extent, and transit was in demand. It would have been nice to put in the 10th Ave station, but even he couldn't get past cost overruns.

True enough. Early on, they probably figured that automobile infrastructure could handle it; later, developers probably figured the state will deal with the problem, they didn't have to worry about it (until it becomes an impediment to selling property).

Why hold an absolutely necessary capital improvement up because a fantasy project won't integrate into it in the easiest manner possible?

Also, the West Shore line could just as easily go through a junction with the Sports Complex spur. The original plan was to go that way to begin with.

It's a bit dated now, but I found this today while searching for something else. If you know of a better resource, please post it.
