The George Washington Bridge Bus Station in upper Manhattan is shut down for an expensive extreme year-long makeover. Not everyone is happy about it. A temporary trailer is serving as a waiting room, ticketing area, police base and operations. Upstairs, buses are arriving and departing from the top level of the building. Despite the posted signs, many commuters say they were caught off guard. It's the biggest renovation project for the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in five decades. "Too many steps, my feet no good. I walk step by step. One, one, one," a commuter said. But riders like Really Caldwell say it comes at a price. "I didn't know it was closed when I came over this morning. Otherwise I wouldn't have come. I came from Jersey," Caldwell said. Riders describe chaos for the Monday morning commute, then an exhausting haul up a flight of stairs for the evening commute. It's all because the terminal is closed for one year during construction. "It might be difficult for the handicapped. I haven't seen a wheelchair area yet or an elevator," said Adrian Vivar, a rider. Councilmember Ydannis Rodriguez says his office is getting a lot of complaints. "I'm working with the Port Authority because there's not a wheelchair accessible right now. We need to put together an alternative," Rodriguez said. With the complaints come praise for the $183 million project that's expected draw 600 permanent jobs in a new state of the art facility in Washington Heights. "It's a long time coming; we have needed this for so long. It's just much needed. I'm looking forward to it. Not the next 12 months," said Jean Turano, a rider. The trailer has been installed on Fort Washington Avenue and 179th Street to serve as an interim location for bus station services until the new building is completed. It will provide passengers with a climate-controlled passenger waiting area, public restrooms, ticketing and information services. To access the subway station, commuters are advised to use the stairs on 177th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. Jitney, long haul, and local buses will operate along the perimeter of the top level of the bus station. Departing passengers will access their bus platform via a temporary staircase on Fort Washington Avenue and 179th Street. Arriving passengers will exit their bus platform via an existing staircase to 178th Street. Customers can enter the Subway at 177th. Pickup for disabled passengers will remain on Fort Washington Avenue. The Port Authority says the new bus station will feature an array of first-class national and local retailers, new bus loading/unloading areas, passenger amenities and new ADA-compliant escalators and elevators from the subway and street to the bus station level. Obviously the news people interviewed those that don't know nothing about the closing. There are signages in the building before closing I bet and on NJ Transit website and NJT G.W.B bus schedules. Obviously a lot of these commuters should know that NJ Transit vehicles do not pick-up or drop off on NYC streets unless it's ADA wheel-chair. The ADA part will change once the renovations are complete. This time people using wheelchairs or motor scooters have to use the new elevator, but we will see |

The NJT timetables say that persons wishing wheelchair pick-up or drop-off at either PABT or GWB must telephone a 973 number and make arrangements for street pick-up or drop-off. I'm fairly certain that the second-floor terminal at GWB has no roadway connection to Manhattan. Access is only to/from New Jersey. I wonder how the Fort Washington Avenue location could be reached, or whether NJT might substitute a van for that person. |

If convenient, would you or someone tell me the Manhattan street (and nearest intersection) from which the upper level of the GWB Terminal can be accessed? I know the vans or jitneys enter the lower level from West 179th Street, but using Google Street View I cannot find any ramp to the upper level from a Manhattan street. I have searched from Riverside Drive (access only to I-95 or city streets, not to the upper level) all the way to Wadsworth Avenue. In the block between Broadway and Wadsworth Avenue, some gates look suspicious (maybe a ramp there?), but nothing else shows up. Many thanks. Joe |

From W179, you take the ramp for the GWB upper level, but before you actually merge into I-95, there's a left turn and a crossover that heads to W178. If you make a hard left, you take the ramp to the upper level. Same thing coming out of the upper level - that same crossover takes you to W178 - this is how the M98 entered the upper level for many years.In the image, the red lines show the way in, the blue lines the way back out to Manhattan.

As of 3.14.2017, the New York Times website includes a story written the previous day, "Manhattan's Other Bus Terminal, Running Years Late." Most of the article discusses the fate of the small retailers who had left the old second floor or those who planned to enter the renovated quarters, now long delayed. There is a good photo of the waiting room in a trailer on Fort Washington Avenue and another photo of the flight of stairs to departing buses. Nothing is said of the "island" (my term) being constructed in the center of the departure (third) level. As far as I can figure, the buses will loop the island, heading nose into slots on east and west sides. Probably elevators or escalators will connect this to the shopping center or street level, though one must remember that the streets rise westward from Broadway to Fort Washington Avenue.--- I also point out the headline should read Station, not Terminal. |

Does Fort Lee want a bus terminal? I doubt it. And by the time the GWBBS was built, it was too late to run trains over the GWB, since both levels had been devoted to motor traffic.The Station has been described as looking bird-like, so I guess it could be an albatross, but I don't think it is one in the way you mean. I remember when Short Line ran regular service from there, with passengers told to "Change at Paramus" (for buses from PABT) for destinations not served directly. All longer-distance buses operated out of the ground floor, using driveways to and from 178th and 179th Streets, rather than from upstairs using the ramps to and from the Bridge. There were even a few buses that didn't use the GWB at all, but instead ran to/from the Washington (18st St.) Bridge and the Cross Bronx Expressway. With all buses now to arrive and depart from the upper level, will some be allowed to make what amounts to a U-turn before getting on the Bridge and enter city streets via the 178th St. exit ramp from the upper level, or will the Bus Station be strictly for buses crossing the GWB? |

Yes, you can still make the u-turn to either go back into the terminal or down to street level. So buses from, say, New England can access it as well. TBH though, they really fucked up with the reconstruction of the terminal. I took a tour for perspective operators and they designed it for commuters and not-intercity. The waiting room is TINY with enough seating for at best 1 bus load of passengers. As an operator, for what they're charging there, it's just not worth it to me. Washington Hts, Inwood, and Marble Hill/Riverdale (and even then, the 1 train doesn't have direct walking access to the station) are really all that are convenient to it, along with parts of the Bronx if going by car/city bus. Anything else south of there is just as quick a ride to the PABT. I would rather cross the bridge and use the Fort Lee station (which I've even done just as a charter driver coming back from Michigan once) and another spot in the Bronx where I'm the clearly more convenient option over the PABT. |

Still bummed they obliterated any chance at rail on the Tappan Zee replacement. Couldn't squeeze in two measly tracks? The fatal flaw was trying to run them into the Hudson line - instead, they should have lofted them over 287 and merged them into the Harlem line. Capacity could be addressed by re-instating the 4th track south of Scarsdale, and the two tracks through Hartsdale. If through tracks were really needed they could tunnel them under the existing Scarsdale ROW and trains would use electric mode for that brief portion. |

Trying to get to the Hudson Line would mean doubling back from the bridge level to the river level, or constructing expensive ramps over the water They'll already be doing that trying to reach the Harlem Line. |

It'll be torturous trying to create a low-grade access route to the Harlem Line. I-287's right of way already has several curves, grades not conducive to rail for the 100-foot climb from Tarrytown to White Plains, and no room to construct a parallel rail route; looks like this was not included in the plan for the bridge. And then there would be the matter of a high-enough-speed curve from such a route onto the Harlem Line. The possibility of NIMBY opposition in Elmsford (a former railroad town, which wouldn't exist without the Putnam Division) and Fairview would need to be touched on as well. |

The EIS had various alternate routes for rail from Tarrytown to Rye via White Plains. I believe they addressed some of the points you raise, though probably did not envision a track connection to the Harlem Line. |
