Posted by Gold_12th on Sun Aug 24 22:38:21 2014 TRAVEL ADVISORY - GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE BUS STATION WILL BE CLOSED STARTING MONDAY, AUGUST 25, TO ALLOW FOR COMPLETE REDEVELOPMENTDate: Aug 22, 2014 Press Release Number: 174-2014 Port Authority has installed a temporary trailer adjacent to the GWBBS to allow bus station services to continue during construction The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will close the George Washington Bridge Bus Station (GWBBS) Monday, August 25 for approximately one year as work proceeds to modernize and fully redevelop the vital transportation facility. Throughout the construction process, bus service will continue to operate without interruption from the top level of the building; however, changes will be made to the location of bus loading and unloading platforms in order to allow work to proceed. A temporary trailer has been installed adjacent to the GWBBS on Fort Washington Avenue and 179th Street to serve as an interim location for bus station services until the new building is completed. It will provide passengers with a climate-controlled passenger waiting area, public restrooms, ticketing and information services. Starting Monday, access to the interior of the bus station will close. The passageway to the 175th Street subway station will also close that day, starting at 1 a.m. To access the subway station, commuters are advised to use the stairs on 177th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. Jitney, long haul, and local buses will operate along the perimeter of the top level of the bus station. Departing passengers will access their bus platform via a temporary staircase on Fort Washington Avenue and 179th Street. Arriving passengers will exit their bus platform via an existing staircase to 178th Street. Customers can enter the Subway at 177th. Pickup for disabled passengers will remain on Fort Washington Avenue. In June 2011, the Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved a $183.2 million renovation plan for the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. This project is expected to result in 324 direct jobs and direct payroll wages of $19 million. It will generate $31.7 million in total regional economic activity. The new bus station will feature an array of first-class national and local retailers, new bus loading/unloading areas, passenger amenities and new ADA-compliant escalators and elevators from the subway and street to the bus station level. The facility also will have new technology, improved signage and lighting, as well as new electronic communications that will provide passengers with improved arrival and departure information at key decision points throughout the building. http://www.panynj.gov/press-room/press-item.cfm?headLine_id=2057 |
