I don't know if this was reported back in the day. But i'm surprised why this didn't stop Blitz buses from being in service.
This occured on the VZ bridge if i remember with a 5500's Blitz express on the X1. Apparently some customer was sitting under where the back wheel was when the bottom gave out and the customer was injured in the eye permantly. I remember the 5500's Blitz being pulled from YUK and being sent to UP. But my question was why keep them in service if this occured? Anyone remember this?

They were sent all over the place -- Flatbush had some as well. They were removed from express service but were determined roadworthy for local service.

Yup. Hudson Pier even got a couple of them. And man, were they FAST!!!
The story is that the man was sitting opposite one of the rear duals when the airbag let loose and the Blitz dropped on the tires. The tires ate through the fiberglass (?) that made the rear dual covers and exploded it into the passenger compartment, permanantly blinding the poor commuter.

the bus was 5567. the next day all were pulled off the road and rts buses were sent from all over the city to yukon to cover the loss. as david said ta sent them to other depots for local service. it happened in 1992. in may of 1993 orion express coaches arrived to replace them and in 1995 the blitz buses days were ended. the company that rebuilt them said they would be good for seven years and as usual ta didnt listen.

That story sounds about right.

I believe it happened on the Gowanus, not on the bridge.

I thought it was 5570, maybe I'm wrong.

Maybe that was the highest # so that why it stuck out in my mind.

#5575 was the highest. My question is a accident like this why get rid of them from YUK but send them to local service?

The others were inspected and those that were saved did not have corrosion in the wheel well like the incident bus had.

I don't know the mindset of NYCT, but I'm sure SI'ers were not happy riding old express buses even before that incident. That incident certainly gave the buses a bad reputation and I doubt if any of them ever wanted to ride in one of them again.

IDK if all Blitz buses were pulled out of SI, but I doubt if passengers in other boroughs knew of the incident.

Just a hunch.

When Blitzes arrived at MSBA, I "adopted" soft-seat #5549 and used it almost daily until it was retired. Kept it clean and the passengers loved MSBA's only soft-seat bus. I used it exclusively on the N20 and N21 for its final operating days. After its retirement someone sent me a photo of it at the scrapyard - I cried....

The "Blitz" fishbowls were numbered as follows:
1966: 5000-5022
1968: 5100-5134 - local; 5135-5159 express
1971: 5200-5284
1972: 5300-5404
1973: 5500-5527 - local; 5528-5576 express
FYI, it was 5567 that had that mishap on the VZ. I have a slide of it currently for sale on ebay (my ebay ID is nhrrlives) of it in the back of Walnut Base Shop after the mishap. The rear axle was missing and the rear end was sitting on jack stands.
I will be doing the next Urban Transit Club show on July 14. I plan to include that shot in the show as well as many other vintage NYC buses and subways. More details on the club website at www.utcny.org
There was one other fishbowl bus that got the rubber bumpers like the Blitz rebuilds (6957), which was sold with #6000 to a bus collector in California.

I remember that! An air bag blew where the passenger was sitting.
That side of the bus went dowm over the rear wheels and the tires
ate up the wheel housing which was suppose to be anodized aluminum,
but was redone with fiberglass. Huh!! The MTA wanted to keep it
under the cuff, so they sent those 5500's to Ulmer Park, and Hudson.
Not sure if they went to any other depots. I can tell you this, those
buses were fast.

Those buses were equipped with 6V-71's, but because some of the
5500's were used for express service, Blitz installed a 4-5/8
rear axle ratio which gave the bus a 4.82 final drive ratio.
This allowed these buses to travel at a higher speed then the other
Blitz buses. I am sure that the operators that drove these buses
out of Hudson and Ulmer Park Depots would agree that those 5500's
that were used at Yukon were fast buses. BTW, 5500-5527 were 5309's,
5528-5576 were 5310's--It was this group that were fast.
5556 (fire) and 5567 (traffic accident) were both destroyed.

Before Stengel, 93073 was at Fresh Pond, intended for service along with the entire lot that wound up at Stengel.

The assignment was altered when it was discovered that 93073 and her Orion V sisters would not fit thru the bus wash, had something to do with the right side mirror.
