"It’s a bit of an adventure, I guess. It's a bit of an adrenaline rush when you jump out of the back. It’s pretty cool," said KCC student Calvin Roberts. With a 30-percent jump in the number of students, Kingsborough Community College officials say they hired the SAFE Coach Bus Company more than a year ago to run shuttles to the local subway station because it felt there were not enough MTA buses. But with students regularly jumping out the back of the yellow buses, residents say they are anything but safe. "It's very dangerous jumping off the bus," said a local. Kingsborough officials say they have put security assistants on some buses and warn if students continue using the emergency exits inappropriately, the college will have to discontinue the service. There's another issue, as MTA bus drivers say these buses are blocking city bus stops. "We cannot pull safely to the curbs to discharge the wheelchair passengers. We can't pull into our stops. We have to double-park. We have to wait for the school buses to load and unload," said Thomas McNally of Transport Workers Union Local 100. "They're illegally using our stops and it's causing a delay in service for the B1 route." The college said the bus company has recently agreed to stop using MTA bus stops and is working with the police precinct to determine where it should drop off passengers. Kingsborough officials say they were only forced to hire the buses because the MTA refused to increase service to the campus. But the MTA says it never refused to add service and works closely with the college checking ridership numbers. MTA officials say they are now ready to add more B1 and B49 service starting next week. It is good news for the college but it may not have all students jumping for joy. |
