And in 1969-70, there were Borgaschmord trains galore. You would see anything and everything thrown together. And not just on the IRT, either.

The TA didn't make it any easier with the limited route signs on the R40/42/44s. After the first few years of specific assignments they were all over the place and would display blank signs when they ran.

Assuming that one could actually read the roll signs which were usually covered in graffiti. The "rule of thumb" in those days was to get on any train that was actually moving, regardless of the route.

I remember the cheap black and white signs they put in back in the 1980's and even then they were wrong. All the R42s on the J displayed 168th St as the terminal until the mid 1980's, then Queens Blvd until they were overhauled.

R16's never got Queens Blvd signs. They were either blank or had 168th St upside down. I also recall seeing "Queens Plaza" on occasion. There seemed to be no consistency. This was no big deal because improperly signed trains were a normal thing in the 1980s.

There were actually two different reasons for it, and it didn't happen all that often either. First was to try to spread out the few air conditioned cars amongst as many trains as they could which meant one married pair might end up in a consist just so they could be spotted and "enjoyed" by the masses as they came in.

The really weird consists were thrown together out of whatever could be drilled into a train as they had serious car shortages and if they could make up 8 or 10 cars into a train, that was an interval that ended up not being abandoned entirely. Things were that bad back in those days.

The IRT seemed to be the only division that segregated cars by electrical manufacture as opposed to the IND and BMT which pre Chrystie segregated equipment by car type. What is interesting that the same IRT lines that were WH were also the same lines that were Hi-V lines and the GE lines were the former Lo-V lines. It’s not too different now with the 1,3 and 6 (traditional Hi-V lines) having R-62s and 62As and the 2, 4, and 5 (traditional Lo-V lines) having R-142s and 142As.

That was because the cesspool of incompetence that passes for TA management insisted on having the roll signs display the strip map of the lines they were running on and there wasn’t enough room on the sign roll for all the lines and various combinations. Back when I was in the schedule office in 1977, I placed a suggestion with the TA Employee suggestion Program for a 3 piece roll sign that contained the bullet and the upper and lower destinations. It would have been accepted except that there was no provision for the strip map so it was ultimately rejected. By the time the R-62s and 68s were ordered, they were specified with the exact same 3 piece roll sign I designed a few years earlier and without the strip map although the so called MTA planners did want to keep the strip maps but fortunately intelligent heads prevailed.

When the Culver initially went to using 9 Av as its full time terminal, it used both tracks and relayed on the middle N/O 9 Av. When the Culver first went single track, it used the NORTHBOUND track and, as I recall, with the modified Lo-Vs. Looking back on it, I imagine that the N/B tk was used while the S/B tk was completely overhauled for full time use at which time the S/B tk became the full time track and the N.B tk was removed.

I suspect that the reason more R-38 E trains displayed Hudson Terminal rather than Chambers St had to do with the position of the readings on the sign roll. The Hudson Terminal reading was closer to the Euclid and Rockaway readings when it came to changing the signs post rush at 179 St. At 168 St on the other hand, Chambers St was probably closer to the Coney Island and Bay Pky readings when Bs were changed to AAs so that would be the reason that the R-32s on the AA read Chambers St more that Hudson Terminal.

Looks like they had an X pattern on Saturdays approaching 57th :

Broadway-4th AV Local (RR) to 57th
Broadway –West End Express (T) to Astoria, or did the T run local in Manhattan ?
