There were actually two different reasons for it, and it didn't happen all that often either. First was to try to spread out the few air conditioned cars amongst as many trains as they could which meant one married pair might end up in a consist just so they could be spotted and "enjoyed" by the masses as they came in.The really weird consists were thrown together out of whatever could be drilled into a train as they had serious car shortages and if they could make up 8 or 10 cars into a train, that was an interval that ended up not being abandoned entirely. Things were that bad back in those days. |
