Back in the day when railcars were pretty much dumb mechanical beasties, a design could last for decades. The problem with that approach is that new technology is better by any performance measure and much less expensive. The railroad industry remained in a time warp and continued to employ 1920's technology until the end of the 20th century. The reason they abandoned the 1920's technology is that nobody would manufacture it. There are ways to write software that is pretty much hardware independent. The MTA did not follow such procedures, when they specified their NTT trains. I've wrote about placing LON Works in the specification. I've also wrote about the hardware specific messages between the LON Works nodes within the NTT cars. This pretty much guaranteed incompatibility between different orders. |
