That was because the cesspool of incompetence that passes for TA management insisted on having the roll signs display the strip map of the lines they were running on and there wasn’t enough room on the sign roll for all the lines and various combinations. Back when I was in the schedule office in 1977, I placed a suggestion with the TA Employee suggestion Program for a 3 piece roll sign that contained the bullet and the upper and lower destinations. It would have been accepted except that there was no provision for the strip map so it was ultimately rejected. By the time the R-62s and 68s were ordered, they were specified with the exact same 3 piece roll sign I designed a few years earlier and without the strip map although the so called MTA planners did want to keep the strip maps but fortunately intelligent heads prevailed. |
