Amtrak is scheduling extra train service for the 10/30 Stewart-Colbert Rally. As of now there will be two extra round trips using leased commuter trainsets that originate/terminate in Philly as well as an extra southbound Morning AX from NYP and an extra northbound evening Regional train to NYP.

Extra trains are as follows:

2201 - Departing NYP 7:00am with Acela Express Equipment
1021 - Departing PHL 7:15am with Commuter Equipment Arr WAS 9:27
1053 - Departing PHL 8:15am with Commuter Equipment Arr WAS 10:30

1058 - Departing WAS 6:30pm with Commuter Equipment Arr PHL 8:50pm
1180 - Departing WAS 7:06pm with Regional Equipment Arr NYP 10:28pm
1082 - Departing WAS 7:30pm with Commuter Equipment Arr PHL 9:50pm

I don't remember Glenn Beck getting any extra train service on Amtrak of course I assume most of his attendees came in RVs.

Oh, this rally ought to be hilarious. After all, it's Stewart and Colbert. I kinda doubt that WMATA will break a ridership record, since the Obama inauguration record is pretty high, but you never know.

Nilet RailroadDo you know what kind of commuter equipment those trains will be using? Is it MARC? Or will they bring NJT sets down even though the trains start/end in Philly?

And no, Glenn Beck didn't get extra Amtrak service— most of the attendees at those rallies were bussed in by the corporate sponsors who created the "Tea Party" movement.

Eh? You really believe that the chief obstacle to expanded commuter service is Amtrak? Instead of forcing yourself to consider the implications of urban planning and hidden subsidies and entrenched political interests and consumer preferences you can just blame Amtrak. I gotta try this myself. Hmmm, how are we going to deal with climate change...oh! It's a myth! Problems solved. Hm, how can we solve poverty, hmm. Oh! Taxes and welfare make people poor! That's two down, I'm on a roll here.

It would be so satisfying to watch your head explode in a world where all your little simple solutions are implemented, yet somehow fail to solve life's complex problems.

Why are these the only choices?

Primarily because re-allocation of money that gets funneled to the FHWA is even less likely than additional money going to pay Amtrak's operating subsidy and capital plan or the HSR programme. There's always going to be some member of Congress begging for money for a roadway project in his district.

ditching HSR

Again, it's critical to fund the HSR programme in certain corridors to make the investment worth it to shift riders to rail-based transportation in order to free up capacity on highways and at airports. In the case of California, given the choice of having to upgrade every major airport in the state or rebuild CA 99 for increased traffic, I'd much rather give precedence to a form of transportation that doesn't require fossil fuels.

You sure didn't post in the thread two days ago where the gov't blamed Amtrak for stopping the service going on 4 years from now.

Well thank God for gov't, so it can fix the problems it created. Ruin the feasibility of passenger rail service that built the country, and then take it over after it's been sabotaged by public policy. Then we can be all snotty about how the gov't is proving us with the very late and unrealiable amtrak service because no one else is.

I hope Obamacare isn't that bad.

And this is going to be hilarious. Gov't policy on transportation is always blamed for the failure of passenger rail in the country, but it might be construed as pro-GOP during an election, so we must change the narrative to say that's not true at all suddenly.

You don't need to raise taxes for Amtrak. Amtrak's budget versus the trillions they spend is such a non-percentage already that today it's a bigger farce to go after amtrak than it was before Obamanomics.

"May 7 (Bloomberg) -- Amtrak, the U.S. long-distance passenger rail carrier, would get a subsidy increase of less than 1 percent, to $1.5 billion, under President Barack Obama’s proposed budget.

The increase for the Washington-based railroad compares with the $1.84 billion Amtrak sought for fiscal 2010. "

Ignoring that Obama wanted to gave them less than requested(watches Jersey Mikes head pop off), that is a small amount when you look at how much a new LRT costs, or how much the HSR is costing, and this is to operate a full national network.

I think out of trillions, if Amtrak needed something, it's in a present budget pretty easy. Not like they pass laws that fund anything that has to do with the orignal law at all anymore.

The solution to bad government policy isn't no government policy is GOOD government policy. Every form of transportation has required SOME form of government policy. From William Penn grid street layout of Philadelphia to the land grant railroads of the 19th century, to the good roads movement of the 1920's to the interstate highway system of the 1950's all transportation has been dependent on government policy.

I'm pretty satisfied with government transportation policy. It's delivered good value for money, it just needs to change since the marginal benefit from new highway projects has declined from what it was back in the day.
