It's illegal to walk between the cars at all times. I've seen the cops at Jamaica Center pick people right off the train for doing this, even though the train is standing in the station. Those cops don't play, either, they don't give "warnings", only tickets or arrests in JC.

That 49th St. exit is the newest, only coming with WWP. Both upper platforms had traces of former exits at 51 and 52nd for a long time and there were closed off stairs between upper and lower around 51st as well.

The 52nd uptown exit was the last to remain to be seen from above ground and was in fact reopened until sometime in the eighties.

Anyone who remembers is free to correct me.

I remember in 1980 seeing closed exits on both E platforms to 49th Street, with the downtown one re-opening with the opening of WWP in 1989. Those exits probably were closed off after 1968 when the old MSG was torn down.

But they also don't want to have someone claim discrimination either in all likelihood. Better safe than sorry in that scenario, especially with the serious problem of kids train surfing, which I believe is why that law is there in the first place.

No, the law was put in place ostensibly to keep would-be terrorists from placing explosives or biochem agents in tunnels or sabotaging the tracks. Windows were also ordered kept closed at the same time.

Interesting:

While the law may have actually been put in for that reason, there is the side benefit of such a law preventing some kids from doing "train surfing," which as we all know is very dangerous.

I agree that it's unusual to have a station at the highest point in the subway system, where it is inconvenient to climb all those stairs when the escalators aren't working. Some might say it's just inconvenient, period. But that's how it's been for a very, very long time.

The Smith/9th viaduct was a last minute change in the original IND South Brooklyn Line design. Original plans were to tunnel under Gowanus Creek. I've never seen the original plans, but I always wondered why the decision was made to have a station at Smith/9th on the viaduct when it is very unlikely there would have been a station had the line tunnelled under Gowanus Creek.

When the center track through Nevins St existed, there was no spur track between Nevins and Atlantic. Before the realignment of the Nevins/Atlantic area, the present spur track was the N/B express track and the present N/B express track was the N/B lcl track. Where the N/B lcl track presently is, was a ramp up from what would have been an IRT connection to the 4 Av subway which would have been used if the IRT had been assigned the 4 Av subway. Since the BRT/BMT got the 4 Av subway, that ramp was not needed and sat unused until it was covered over to make the trackway for the realigned N/B lcl track. When the tracks were realigned, the former N/B lcl track became the new N/B express track and the former N/B express track became the present Nevins St spur.

Also, note the 2 orange colored spur stubs on the north side of the Nevins St local tracks. They were built by the IRT to hopefully use the north tracks of the Manhattan Bridge to a rebuilt 3rd Ave el. The City, probably angered by the IRT's stonewalling to expand its Manhattan el platforms for 8 cars, gave the trackage to the BRT for its Broadway subway.

5. The stupidity of the set ups at 34th Street on both 7th and 8th Avenue where if you're waiting on the express tracks and a local train arrives first you really can't get there from here if you know what I mean.

That was done purposely, and with a good intention. They knew that was going to be a VERY busy station, so why have people transferring between locals and expresses at an already busy station? Especially with 42 only a station away.

But the more usual practice would be to put the local on the upper level and the express on the lower (like 86th and Lex, for example). That way, when the express is not running, the stairs to the lower express platform can be closed. The way it is, late night passengers must descend to the lower level from the unused upper level. Is there a reason they couldn't ramp up the local tracks rather than the express?

Why would they build an express station just for MSG? They built a local station for Yankee Stadium. Not to mention that in 1932, pro basketball had not yet started at MSG and hockey was new. The biggest events at MSG were boxing and (IINM) the circus. These bring lots of people in short bursts but not on a regular basis enough to justify express trains stopping all the time.

The local tracks would have to pinch inward once they finished the climb, increasing the length of the ramping, possibly impinging on adjacent stations (which is irrelevant for expresses). Finally, the expresses would then have to spread out to avoid being underneath the upper level tracks and use the existing platforms. The structural supports for the upper level tracks run directly underneath them.

If only the G connected to Bergen LL. Then it could terminate there and not interfere with the F.

Both very true statements which I agree with.

Except that the tunnels do not allow for this, AND LL is uninhabitable anyway.
