I agree that it's unusual to have a station at the highest point in the subway system, where it is inconvenient to climb all those stairs when the escalators aren't working. Some might say it's just inconvenient, period. But that's how it's been for a very, very long time.The Smith/9th viaduct was a last minute change in the original IND South Brooklyn Line design. Original plans were to tunnel under Gowanus Creek. I've never seen the original plans, but I always wondered why the decision was made to have a station at Smith/9th on the viaduct when it is very unlikely there would have been a station had the line tunnelled under Gowanus Creek. --Mark |
