Because over the years, they took out various zones in between, and added the stations that used to be in the removed zones to the zone prior or latter. They used to be consecutive.

I think it was also a way to increase fares without saying they were increasing fares. Old zones 5, 6 and 7 were combined to new zone 7. In effect, zones 5 and 6 were stepped up to zone 7 fares.

I could never understand why Woodside is in Zone 1 with Penn Station when Woodside is in Queens. They obviously want to make $$$. No doubt about it.

If I had it my way, only Penn Station and Flatbush Avenue would be in Zone 1. The rest of what is now in Zone 1 would be Zone 2, and Jamaica would be a dual-zone station (Zone 3 for westbound trips, Zone 2 for eastbound trips).

And old zone 8 vanished and became zone 9.

"I could never understand why Woodside is in Zone 1 with Penn Station when Woodside is in Queens."

This discourages subway transfers at Woodside to and from the 7, which already has all the riders it needs. You can do it if you like, but you won't save any money. By the way, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills are also in Queens and also in zone 1, perhaps for the same reason in the case of Forest Hills.

Those stations are all west of Jamaica, as are the zone 1 ENY & Nostrand. I'm surprised LIRR never took after NJT and tried to jack up the price on a NYP to JFK via Jamaica ticket.

If Woodside & ENY were zone 2/3 rather than 1, I know I would transfer to the subway there rather than at Jamaica.....

Fordham on MNRR is either zone 2, or zone 11, depending on what kind of mood the ticket machine is in that month.

There's a key difference between the EWR NJT station and the Jamaica LIRR station. At EWR there is no exit from the station other than to the airport (via AirTrain) whereas at Jamaica there is an entire community at the station. If the goal here is to punish people using public transportation to the airport then it is easily accomplished at EWR but impossible to do so at Jamaica without punishing the entire residential and commercial community.

Sure there is. Offer an option in the ticket machine for JFK. Take the cost of a NYP-JAM ticket, plus the cost of an Airtrain swipe, and then throw an extra $3 on top of it.

That's what NJT does if you buy a NYP-EWR ticket, vs if you bought a NYP-Elizabeth ticket and then bought an Airtrain swipe separately.

which stations were in zone 5 and 6 on LIRR?
How about zone 8? Was Huntington in ZOne 8?

anyway if you compare LIRR prices of 1993 to nowdays,
now only senior/disabled can ride on a full off-peak fair of 1993

On the Long Beach branch:

Center Avenue, East Rockaway and Oceanside were Zone 5
Island Park and Long Beach were Zone 6

On the Babylon:

Rockville Centre, Baldwin and Freeport were Zone 5
Merrick, Bellmore and Wantagh were Zone 6

I don't recall the Oyster Bay, Huntington or Ronkonkoma branches. I don't know if this is still the case, but there used to be a system map on the back of the tickets that conductors sold on board. The lines were there for the current zones, but if you drew a horizontal line across between Freeport and Merrick and then another between Wantagh and Seaford, you could see which stations were in Zone 5 vs Zone 6 or Zone 6 vs Zone 7.

What was the only LIRR Station that had it's Zone number reduced?

The answer I was thinking of was Montauk -- which was the only station in Zone 15, and was eventually moved to Zone 14.

My question was wrong, though, and you are correct. Zone 11 stations were moved to Zone 10. I don't recall which fare was the base. (in the case of the 5/6/7 combination, 7 was the base and 5 and 6 got disproportionately larger increases).
