I'd say that three of the fastest locations are:1. s/b Lexington express 59th street 2. 60th street tube, Manhattan-bound 3. Broad Channel, Rockaway-bound 60th street and Broad Channel can get up to 50+ mph. |

Without starting a new thread, I'd say the slowest run in the system is the Steinway Tunnel run of the #7. Of an East River crossing anyway. |

As far as I know, the R46's were never tested on the LIRR. When the R44's were tested there, they cracked the 85mph mass transit speed equiptment barrier, however, had to limp back to TA property with at least half the traction motors burnt out from what I've heard. |

I didn't realize that MARTA went that fast! We don't hear enough about MARTA here. The only threads that I see are negative.FWIW, MARTA is the fifth largest metro system in the country with a network larger than Philadelphia and Los Angeles (excluding their supplemental streetcar and stadtbahn networks). While SubChat has its insular tendencies, MARTA is generally overlooked by it's generational siblings, WMATA and BART, due to its lower (but not abysmal) ridership counts, and the fact that Atlanta isn't the type of place that one thinks of in terms of transit-oriented development. Unlike a CTA "L", WMATA Metrorail or NYC Subway in the US or Paris Metro, Madrid Metro, London Underground, or Moscow Metro in Europe, the average railfans isn't craving a ride on MARTA. Hell, the only reason I even bothered riding was because I asked my cousin to escort me on a visit there nearly six years ago. |

Miami-Dade Transit's Metrorail deserves some honorable mentions as well. The Metrorail (using Budd 100's, similar to Baltimore MTA) can run at speeds up to 70 MPH between Allapattah and Palmetto, albeit done in ATO, while the "operator" merely sits in the cab reading a newspaper between stations, only to open and close the doors and make announcements in stations. The MDT Metrorail is actually a clean, well run system, and it is a shame that, for now, it consists of only one like. Big time expansion plans are in the works for MDT Metrorail. But folks, c'mon, do remember (especially all you R-44 haters) who holds the speed record for fastest speed of subway/rapid transit equipment....87.75 MPH......the R-44!!!!!!! Keep that in mind, fellas!! :-D |

NYC has several trunks that have multiple lines. MARTA on the rookies guide even states they have 4 lines. We used to have one subway line in LA and now we have two without having added any stations or track because the red line was split into red and purple. I guess that we can all agree on the number of stations. As it happens MARTA is 7th in number of stations, 7th in riders per mile, and 7th in total system miles. It's pretty average in terms of riders per mile as well. As opposed to BART which is fairly abysmal. |

Actually I just described BART ridership as "abysmal" in another post. Less than 4k per mile for heavy rail is pretty bad for a big metro/transit area like SF.There used to be a "Rob from Atlanta" (IIRC) that would post about MARTA. Not sure what happened to him. You are defining routes. You could run a train from Jamaica to 205th in the Bronx continuously without changing ends, but that's a route, not a line. The route uses multiple trunks. For the record, Queens Blvd to 6th Ave to Coney Island via Culver, Sea Beach, West End or Brighton; return via any of those four which were not used to get to CI, via Bridge to Manhattan, to the 8th Ave line at West 4th, then the Concourse line. |

What does it say about Mass Transit systems in the US is MARTA, with two main lines, is the fifth largest?Quite a bit if you look at the situation carefully. For one thing, it does show a lack of spending on rail transport infrastructure, which can be biased based on political affiliation unlike in other countries where rail transport is considered to be an aspirational goal by both left and right. In turn, it's partially affected by development practices and social norms which make it harder to construct successful railway networks in the first place. Plus, the elevated costs of tunneling and grade separation have lead most cities to construct light rail/stadtbahn networks in lieu of full blown metro systems which have had varying success. We now have multi-line light systems like LACMTA (Blue, Gold, Green, and soon "Expo"), Portland Tri-Met (Red, Green, Yellow, Blue), San Diego (Blue, Orange, Green), and Dallas (Red, Blue, Green) with a number of systems having network mileage larger than that of MARTA. |

And I wonder if Atlanta had built their system 20 years later would they have opted for a primarily light rail system? Given Atlanta's low population density I think that they would have. But then I wonder if they wouldn't have ended up with a system that was twice as large yet had fewer riders? Heavy rail seems like the better long term investment. |
