I thought the shows at the Javits Center were continuous, although most people might not hear about most of them since most are trade specific. Went to a recent one for professional photographers, and the buses were packed. Most people were not aware of that show.Agree about your point regarding development, but is his major concern really helping New York or his real estate developer friends? |

Not to take a position on the Mayor's suggestion, but retirees cost MTA more than "zero." The pension systems are subject to the whims of the financial markets, but the pensions that are paid out are guaranteed. When the markets tank, the governmental entities for which the pensioners worked (New York City, New York State, MTA, etc.) are required to subsidize the systems to which the pensioners belonged (NYCERS, etc.). In fact, MTA's proposed 2010 budget (available on the MTA website) menstions tha a $100 million pension payment for 2009 would be delayed until 2010, as a cash management issue to get MTA through 2009 after the initial announcement (in December) about a shortage of receipts from the payroll tax.David |

That also exempts Federal pensions as well. There was a case a few years ago in Michigan in which the state taxed Federal gov't pensions but not state or local gov't pensions. Federal employees took the case to Federal court and the Feds ruled that if Fed pensions are taxable then state and local pensions also had to be and if state and local pensions were exempt then Fed pensions also had to be. All pensions had to be treated equally regardless of which way the state went. The state opted to make all gov't pensions exempt rather than tax state and local ones. |

AFAIK, since NYCTA employees are considered CITY employees for pension purposes, the only monies the MTA has to pay out is the pension cost for each employee while the employee is still working. Once the employee is retired, the gov't "entity" for which the pensioner worked is considered to be the City of NY which is the entity required to make the payments. I have heard that the MTA is trying to establish its own pension system independent of NYCERS but it is only in the rumor stage at this point. |

Merging all the bus operations, moving towards more OPTO/ATO, automated bus management, changing the station agent role to something that is needed not sitting in the booth sleeping to name a few.10-15% workforce reduction over time is posible |

I had my money eaten by a machine one day and the machine wasn't giving out receipts. Had to get a letter notarized, it was a mess.Now I have one of those cards tied to my debit card. It didn't even say there was a problem with the machine until I put it in the bus. Can't change Station Agents until a Smart Card comes out and I cannot wait for that to happen already. |
