Train-truck collision caught on tape

Published: Tuesday, February 02, 2010
ACWORTH, Ga. — A bystander used the video feature of his cellular phone to capture a collision between a CSX freight train and a semi truck carrying foodstuffs. The video can be watched on My Fox Atlanta's Web site; nobody was killed or seriously injured in the crash.

The truck apparently tried to cross CSX's Atlanta-Cartersville, Ga., route at a crossing that barred trucks due to a low clearance. The truck became stranded on the line, and though police were notified, they weren't able to pass word along to CSX in time. The freight train struck the truck's box trailer. The train's brakes, apparently in emergency, can be heard squealing as two GE diesels slice through the trailer before stopping.

The truck driver faces misdemeanor charges in the incident.

Witness' Video of Train Striking Truck

Reported by George Franco | Edited by Jim Greene

ACWORTH, Ga. -- A man who shot video of an 18-wheeler being hit by a CSX train late Monday morning in downtown Acworth said it's amazing that no one was killed in the accident.

Ron Papaleoni said there was nothing that anyone could do to prevent the train from hitting the tractor-trailer.

Papaleoni saw the truck stuck on the track as he went into the post office. When he came out, he saw the truck still on the track, and heard the train approaching.

Police said they immediately notified CSX when they learned about the tractor-trailer on the tracks, but said there was no way that the train could stop in time.

Papaleoni pulled out his iPhone and took video of the train as it approached the truck, struck it and pushed it down the track.

The tractor-trailer was taking food supplies to Henry's Restaurant in Acworth, and the restaurant had to scramble since it missed its shipment.

The tracks have signs saying "No Trucks Are Allowed To Cross Track " at the intersection, and the driver has been charged with a misdemeanor, authorities said.

There's a similar grade crossing in Peekskill. Banked tracks on a curve. Awhile back, a tractor trailer bottomed out & got hung up there & got nailed by a southbond Amtrak I think. Warning signs all over the place,(no injuries, thankfully) but he went on anyway. Me thinks that the truckers insurance co. has to pay for the damage to the engine.

The truck driver is lookin for a job.

The Peekskill crossing you refer to is Hudson Avenue, immediately north of the Peekskill Train Station.

And job loss is the least of that trucker's problems. If the insurance company only covers a certain amount of damage costs, HE, the trucker, will have responsibility for the rest on his own!! Not to mention he is facing misdemeanor charges, so he will have financial, legal and criminal matters to address!! Small price to pay for major league stupidity.

Yes, the trucker is responsible for damage to the locomotives. That will not be such a big expense and is easily covered by insurance. The company US Foods (?) (We get some of our food from them too) will eat the loss of the truck and trailer, but they have lots of those.

The driver faces a few tickets, well he earned them, but the loss of a job? He would not loose his job out here for something like that, at least not if he has some seniority with the company or a good work record with them. OK it was a dramatic accident, but not all that much real damage.

Who knows, maybe he was a relief driver on that route and was unaware of the problems at that crossing. Maybe the regular route driver had an additional drop at some other place and thought this road would work for him. Maybe lots of things. But you don't fire workers for having an accident like that.

It happened out here with a truck from TMI, and the company stood by their employee, made good the damages and life went on. That is the way it is supposed to be. Good employees, after all are hard to come by, especially with such full employment as we have up here.

Up here, they definitely would not let a guy go for that accident. But what the heck, I'll ask the US Foods driver up here what he heard about it.

It's nice that the trucking company (TMI) "stood by their employee". It is possible to work under truly dismal employment conditions, like the old Metropolitan Ambulance company I moonlighted with once upon a time. There, if you had two chargeable accidents in any 18-month period (company policy was that all accidents, except being struck from directly behind, were your fault, and therefore "preventable"), you were out, fired, gone, and blacklisted. They made SURE you couldn't work for any other ambulance service in town, including the hospitals. You were unemployable, period. Metropolitan's owner was that well-connected.

I daresay if anyone had let one of Metro's ambulances be destroyed by a train, they'd be better off dead...
