Train-truck collision caught on tape

Published: Tuesday, February 02, 2010
ACWORTH, Ga. — A bystander used the video feature of his cellular phone to capture a collision between a CSX freight train and a semi truck carrying foodstuffs. The video can be watched on My Fox Atlanta's Web site; nobody was killed or seriously injured in the crash.

The truck apparently tried to cross CSX's Atlanta-Cartersville, Ga., route at a crossing that barred trucks due to a low clearance. The truck became stranded on the line, and though police were notified, they weren't able to pass word along to CSX in time. The freight train struck the truck's box trailer. The train's brakes, apparently in emergency, can be heard squealing as two GE diesels slice through the trailer before stopping.

The truck driver faces misdemeanor charges in the incident.

ACWORTH, Ga. -- A man who shot video of an 18-wheeler being hit by a CSX train late Monday morning in downtown Acworth said it's amazing that no one was killed in the accident.

Ron Papaleoni said there was nothing that anyone could do to prevent the train from hitting the tractor-trailer.

Papaleoni saw the truck stuck on the track as he went into the post office. When he came out, he saw the truck still on the track, and heard the train approaching.

Police said they immediately notified CSX when they learned about the tractor-trailer on the tracks, but said there was no way that the train could stop in time.

Papaleoni pulled out his iPhone and took video of the train as it approached the truck, struck it and pushed it down the track.

The tractor-trailer was taking food supplies to Henry's Restaurant in Acworth, and the restaurant had to scramble since it missed its shipment.

The tracks have signs saying "No Trucks Are Allowed To Cross Track " at the intersection, and the driver has been charged with a misdemeanor, authorities said.
