Milford Station (The retarded stop!!! How the hell you have a 10-car platform eastbound and a 4-car platform westbound??? "The World May Never Know!!") with the westbound side lookin' MIIIIIIIGHTY packed!!!.....

It's easy to open only four cars for boarding passangers than for departing passangers. If the eastbound side was only 4 cars long, the train will be delayed as people who are in the wrong part of the train will have to race to the proper part to get off. Milford is a busy station, unlike other short platformed stops like East Norwalk.

The upper harlem was upgraded with cab signals all the way to Wassaic about 10-12 years ago. New Fiber cable was laid along the route from Southeast to Wassaic along with CP cabinets and wayside signals at the 2 or 3 passing sidings. There are meets in the peak-hours when they run 4 trains all the way to/from GCT. I remember the old days when there was a locked box on the Southeast platform that had a direct line to the dispatcher in NYC. Each conductor on a northbound would open the box to call for his warrant to proceed north.

That's a similar set up at Linden station on the Northeast Corridor. Westbound, it fits either 8 or 10 cars (I forget exactly, it's been almost 10 years since I worked over there), and eastbound it fits only 5 cars.

I never had any problems and I have worked the NH when Milford was only 4 cars long. It is all in how far in advance that you announce which cars to be in in order to exit, and how well you announce it, and being sure you briefed the crew properly so when people ask, they are informed enough to know where to be and when to head that way.

Perhaps ridership numbers dictate longer platforms for departing passangers. It's still easier to platform an entire train for exiting passangers than to have only a section platform. As you should know, all the announcements in the world will not prevent some morons from being caught in the wrong section.

Thanks a lot for the info man but I just have one more question, the only meeting on the Danbury is at Branchville (or whatever the name of the station with the island platform is, I forgot at the moment) right? If so, then Branchville looks like a short platform, so what happens when a say 4 car train going southbound wants to pass a 7 car train going northbound.

The siding at BL Wilt (Near Wilton Station) is 1,195 ft in length. That's about 13 85 ft coaches plus an engine. The siding at BL Hill(Branchville) is 1,000 ft in length. That's about 10 coaches and an engine. Metro-North doesn't run trains longer than 7 coaches, so that should never be a problem.

The meeting point on the Danbury Branch is at Wilton Siding, and it occurs twice a day 5 days a week, first one being Train 1881 (5:10 pm Danbury to S. Norwalk) meets Train 1844 (5:16 PM Stamford to Danbury), and again later in the night with Train 1895 (8:59 PM Danbury to S. Norwalk) meeting Train 1882 (S. Norwalk to Danbury). There hasn't been a meet at Branchville Siding in quite some time.

No meets are scheduled on the Waterbury as per MNR schedules for the Waterbury Branch.

I guess that trains are stored at Waterbury Yard then, as the second Waterbury train of the day leaves just 40 minutes after the first one, which is about how much time it takes to travel down the branch.

No trains of MNR's are stored in Waterbury. Storage of Waterbury Branch equipment is at New Haven Yard. The small, relatively disused yard belongs to the Springfield Terminal Railway, part of Pan-Am Railways.

I think the Waterbury Line would be a perfect fit for a Light-rail non-electric like the river line. Since CDOT owns the tracks up to at least Torington, I bet they would get decent ridership if they extended it past Waterbury. They could run every hour weekdays and every 3 hours on weekends. That would free-up 2 consists for the other non-electric parts of MNRR. I don't think there is much frieght on it and the only other usage is the tourist line from Waterbury to Thomaston.
