Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Tue Nov 17 22:43:25 2009 Now, as #3008 chugs over the Housatonic, we emerge at Devon Junction (aka Naugatuck Junction), where we see Devon Tower (S.S. 71+), The Waterbury Branch divide. Note, a short way north of CP 261 on the Waterbury Branch is CP 500, where CTC/CSS (Centralized Traffic Control/Cab Signal System) ends, and MBS (Manual Block System) begins, the land of Form Ms (to the NORAC-versed people here, exactly like a Form D), also from this point, the NH Main Line goes from 4 tracks to 3.....CP 261, Devon Tower (S.S. 71+), the Waterbury Branch divides to the left..... ![]() ![]() Under a massive array of new and old catenary towers, the line now goes from 4 tracks to 3, not becoming 4 again until after CP 266 (Milford), when "Industrial 5" Track branches off..... ![]() Milford Station (The retarded stop!!! How the hell you have a 10-car platform eastbound and a 4-car platform westbound??? "The World May Never Know!!") with the westbound side lookin' MIIIIIIIGHTY packed!!!..... ![]() ![]() Now the alleviation of the load at Milford westbound comes..... ![]() HTEL switch (Hand Thrown, Electric Locked) with derail just after, and the "Industrial 5" starts just east of CP 266 off Track 1..... ![]() Now, I am sure someone would wanna know what service runs on "Industrial 5".....well, this part of the NH is freight-served by daytime Cedar Hill Yard 6-day-a-week local B-747 and evening/night local B-748, with several industries receiving cars here, with only 1 siding on the south side of the ROW getting freight, and that siding is just east of CP 257 at East Bridgeport...... Here is the first of several customers along "Industrial 5" eastward, a municipal trash/industrial/construction debris transfer facility, the biggest customer seemingly on this stretch, where B-747 spends most of its time daily, with a large wye configured within the complex for the rail moves..... ![]() (It should be noted, from what I understand, when the West Haven Station is completed, "Industrial 5" will cease to exist, and is due to become Track 3 again, and of course the obvious stick rail will go bye bye and in comes the CWR!!) One siding constantly inhabited by this ballast regulator which has been here for quite some time, and some MOW/contractor hi-railer trucks, and some fresh track ties!! "Industrial 5" has had quite a bit of investment done in it far as trackwork in the last summer or two. CSX should take notes on how to keep stick rail track up to par!!..... ![]() ![]() It should be noted somewhere not to far from this spot is where the West Haven Station is due to be built!! Here comes the second of the three NJTs, #3137, west of CP 271 and the I-95 overpass..... ![]() Now this is something worth a word or two about!! This unusually large nest sits atop CAT 1046A!! It has been speculated that this was built by either a turkey vulture, an osprey or a bald eagle. Whatever the hell it was, it definitely built the mansion of nests, and well guarded too!! Try to get up here.....BZAP ZAP!! Smart friggin' bird!! Even chose to build it on the new catenary tower, CAT 1046A!!! :-D ![]() ![]() "WE ARE WORKIN' ON THE RAIL-ROOOOOOOAD!! ALL OUR LIVE LONG DAAAAAAYS!!" Track workers and crew at CP 271 (Just of note, folks, the chair on the flatcar is not standard package equipment included with the flatcar!! :-D)..... ![]() ![]() ![]() Keeping the railroad in one piece is definitely not easy and definitely not a Mon-Fri, 9-5 thing!! All day, all night, holidays, weekends, 24/7/365!! Much respect to all the guys, including these guys, who keep it all well run like a well oiled machine!! :-) Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeew Haven straight ahead!! Passin' thru CP 271..... ![]() Amtrak Motor Storage, with a real "Mixed Bag 'O' Engines", plus a Metroliner Cab..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We have made it!! Track 4 in the station for arrival, and the MNR Road Foreman there to greet us on our arrival, plus provide spotting info to the engineer!!..... ![]() ![]() As we have arrived safe at New Haven, Track 4, this part has come to a close!! Again, much more still awaits us, and I promise not to disappoint!! Hope I ain't done that so far!! Tune in for more folks!! Hope you all enjoyed thus far!! :-) |

When you're passing through CP 271, how come the M2/M4/M6 cab has both the red and white lights on? Also, are the Danbury, Waterbury, New Canaan, Hudson north of Croton-Harmon, Harlem north of Southeast, Pascack Valley, and Port Jervis lines like the Montauk line in that you have to write down where you're supposed to stop to let other trains come through? |

That pair is a shop move being oved about the yard, looks like from the east shop and off to the west end yard. Normally, the markers are on, and the headlights are to be used when moving the equipment as well. The only place in the territories you mentioned where scheduled meets in Manual Block System territory are scheduled and are included on train orders like Form Ms, Form Ds (NORAC territory), and if I remember right on the LIRR they are called something like Form 18s, not quite sure the number, as ordered by the dispatchers are the Danbury and Montauk lines (Montauk Line east of Speonk, Patchogue-Speonk has been signalled recently)(MNR and LIRR respectively). All of the other territories you mentioned, Port Jervis, Pascack Valley, North of Harmon, North of Southeast, and the New Canaan are all CTC/CSS territories or some are just CTC territories (Port Jervis if I am not mistaken). No meets are scheduled on the Waterbury as per MNR schedules for the Waterbury Branch. |

Years ago IIRC, lit markers on the head end of a Peak train meant either Flatbush Ave. or Penn Station. Bill Newkirk |

Part III, posted by Dutchrailnut on Wed Nov 18 05:54:48 2009. True, on the road on MNR the headlights are supposed to be on and the markers off except on the rear end, but on the LIRR it is used as a form of communication to indicate the train is being run with a shorter than normal consist and that passengers are supposed to position themselves properly on the platform for boarding. It is indicated in all LIRR public timetables. And I am not gonna discuss rules here, but I am sorry to say there is NO SUCH RULE which says the markers are not to be on when on the head end of a move. If that's the case, many conductors and yard crews would be out of service, not to mention the occassional engineer who forgets to shut such off before running on the road. |

That policy of the markers being on to indicate a short consist is also listed on the back of the public timetables there in the information section. I really do not think something that would constitute an operating rules violation would be listed on a public timetable. |

Since this is in the yard, the markers probably remained on, but when making the move, whether the markers are on ro off, the headlights must be on, but in the case of reverse moves, the headlights and the taillights are usually on simultaneously. No such rule exists that forbids this, otherwise A LOT of yard crews and road conductors would be out of service, since this practice is common place just about everywhere on the MNR system during backup moves and yard moves. |

Yes, that would be the Waterbury Branch and just out of view to the north is CP 500, where CTC/CSS ends (Centralized Traffic Control/Cab Signal System) and MBS (Manual Block System) starts. And the derail you refer to is called a split point derail, similar to a track switch when activated, except only one rail is affected which if a train passes it, the train goes on the ground, and on MNR, they are found at CPs that have drawbridges mainly. |

Well, most of them, actually. Usually wherever there's an electrically locked switch. The switch track 5-7 on the north end in Stamford by the employee stop is the only one I can think of off-hand electrically locked without a split-point frog. |

That is your opinion, and your entitled to it. But, you know sometimes it is just nicer as a person to not go there. The views he is sharing is quite unique. It is much better than a RFW view. Not many of uss can get those vantage point TMP is sharing. I am lucky to have had and will continue to have the vantage point, but TMP is a much better photographer than I (I have never once claimed to be a good one at all), so even with seeing the vantage point myself, I still appreciate the photos, and others seem to enjoy them too. You are so far the only one that I see that has had something negative to say. Quite frankly, I think you are letting your distatse for TMP come out and it is obvious to anyone, or is everyone out of step but you? BTW,sen should have been seen |

Actually most sidings are standard apply/open derails which affix to the top of the running rail similar to the Stamford Yard derails or if you look carefully at the derail east of the "Industrial 5" switch or the Rings End siding. Western Cullen-Hayes is a common producer of derails. The places on MNR you can view split point derails are CP 230, 241, 244, 256, 261 and if I am not mistaken CP 4 as well. I believe there is also one at the south end of Harmon Yard at CP33 |

In fact, my boss knows that I am a railfan and sometimes will give me pic opportunities, and sometimes I take them :) But, many when they learn of my being a railfan, ask me why. They think I am nuts. That is when I try and educate.:-) |

When done most actually respect someone who had a goal and want since he was a kid and went out and got it, and can not help but respect someone who truly loves what he does and doesn't see it as a paycheck. |
