I'd say Chicago, but try & focus on one aspect of the rail scene. For instance, you could do the South Shore to Michigan City, back to Kensington , then Metra to Homewood for CN freight. I'm a heavy rail fan, so if time would permit CTA fannin', go get 'em!

BTW the Orange Line goes directly into Midway airport.

I want to hit Michigan City IN before the NICTD decides to de-interurban it by getting rid of the street running

Ain't happenin' anytime soon. That's been talked about since NICTD's inception in the 70's, with no solid proposals that I know of other than the ex-NKP being chosen as the route. The street running is worth the trip......

Chicago hands down. Amtrak accessible. The hub of American railroading and plenty of transit thrown in to boot. It also has other things to do as well.

Amtrak out of there is slow. All diesel too, and too many Stuporliners. (Oh, to see at least AEM-7s running in and out of Union Station; that would be a victory of sorts.)

Amtrak out of there is slow.

79 mph, no electric, slug acceleration. Makes saving up for next year for Europe seem like a bright idea.

I drove through Denver last month and didn't think there was anything remarkable about it. I even searched for stuff to do in Denver in anticipation of going through there, and all the advice that I saw related to the outdoor activities and beauty available within driving distance of the city, rather than the city itself.

That was the impression that I got as well, although I haven't been since the rail lines opened. I went to the US Mint when I was there and couldn't recommend anyone wasting time there. They do have lots of outdoor activities, but like you say most are outside of town. Denver is a HUGE regional center and is the closest "big city" destination for a large geographic area, but for people from other areas and cities, it's not that big of a deal.

So what route did you take and did anything stand out on the trip?

I did a Amtrak Round-Robin alone in 2006: the Lake Shore Ltd then the SW Chief to LA . I stayed over night in LA in a nice hotel 4 blocks from Union Station. Next day the took the Coast Starlight to Seattle.. stayed there 3 nights.. then took the Empire Builder back to Chicago and the lake shore Home.. great trip.. The Builder was 1 minute EARLY into Union station.
