West of Hudson Customers Get More Express Trains and Better Late Night Service

Starting Sunday, July 12, Pascack Valley Line customers will now have four Metro-North Railroad express trains on the weekend—trains that will no longer stop in New Jersey. In addition, Port Jervis Line customers will be able to enjoy additional time in New York City with improved late night service.

The new expresses will depart Spring Valley for Hoboken at 9:27 a.m. and 11:37 a.m., as well as two departures from Hoboken to Spring Valley at 3:20 p.m. and 7:22 p.m. This new express service will provide New York State Pascack Valley Line customers with savings of up to 23 minutes in travel time.

On the Port Jervis Line, the last evening departure from Hoboken on weekdays and weekends will now depart 35 minutes later, at 12:40 a.m., and connect with a Penn Station departure that will leave 45 minutes later, at 12:34 a.m. This will provide numerous advantages including less wait time for the connection, more time for late night customers in New York City, a 15-minute shorter ride for the Penn Station departure customers, and a better transit alternative for late evening events at the Meadowlands Complex when NJ Transit begins direct service there later this summer.

"Rocklanders deserve these better, faster, and more express trains," said Carl V. Wortendyke, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board member representing Rockland County. "It has always been my mission to see that Rockland residents have easier and more convenient access to New York City and, soon, to the Meadowlands Sports Complex."

"Metro-North continually strives to improve service," said Metro-North President Howard Permut. "We are pleased to be able to reduce travel times and reduce wait times for connections for the benefit of our West-of-Hudson customers."

New timetables are available at Hoboken, Penn Station, and all outlying West of Hudson Metro-North train stations, as well as on the website: www.mta.info

Hmmmm, is the MTA "wooing" Rockland County? Sure looks like this is a "please don't go" gesture.

As for the PJ "improvement", it's about time. The last train left too early to enjoy most baseball games. Is the train still a local in Jersey?

Yes - making all stops via Rutherford.

Not sure about the past, but the current train also runs via Rutherford; looks like just a push back in the timetable.

The last train of the night to Suffern - the following train after the last one to Pt Jervis - runs via Paterson.

Well, ain't that weird. Jumping from no service on the weekend to weekend expresses. To think they could have run these trains on the weekend even without the sidings, too . . .

(PS. Please use the hyphen. Metro North sans hyphen is that "metro" in Dublin, Ireland that ain't built yet and they're still fighting over.)

Two different lines. The PVL itself once ran due north from Pearl River to New City. Another line ran north from Spring Valley to Thiells and West Haverstraw. Woodbine yard is the remnant of this line.

I believe I have the answer. These are not new trains. These are trains NJT wanted to cut, but Metro North wanted to retain. As a result, the three trains are no longer stopping in NJ. The MTA now pays 100% of the operating costs for said trains.

It's not a service increase. It's a service retention. It's actually a service CUT for NJ.

I'm surprised that we don't have a spate of new tunnel building, both rail and road, what with the advent of TBMs. (Thought that TBMs made tunnel-building cheaper? We're overdue for "New York Union Station" . . . might as well have all commuter trains going to Manhattan, eh? and for cheaper capital cost than THAT project, i.e. ARC)

I thought Nanuet was on the Piermont line. Guess not.

I Google mapped the area and couldn't find a single trace of this ROW. The line to West Haverstraw is still easily identifiable.

It's a word for word description of the service change from an NJT employee from rr.net, backed up by checking the schedule. The two trains in question are currently locals in NJ, after next week they will not make any stops in NJ north of Secaucus. They are not NEW trains. The MTA now subsidizes the costs of said trains completely, not just north of the Jersey border.

The mainline of the New Jersey and New York Railroad ran from a connection with the Erie in Rutherford to New City. In Nanuet,
there was a wye. the right leg of the wye was the line to New City.
It crossed the Piermont Branch (Original Erie mainline Piermont-
Dunkirk, NY-on Lake Erie) at a diamond. the left leg of the wye
was the connection to the Piermont Branch. NJ&NY trains ran over
this section of the Piermont Branch to Spring Valley where NJ&NY
trackage branched off to the right, through Woodbine, Mt. Ivy,
Thiells, West Haverstraw and Haverstraw. This was the Haverstraw
Branch. I worked in Nanuet station in 1960, when all that trackage
was still intact, and worked as a locomotive engineer on those
lines until 1973.

So all the tracks to Haverstraw and New City was still intact in 1960? I was under the impression it was all gone by WWII.

Rockland would be better served today if one or both branches had survived.

Not really possible. One could extend the Northern Branch from Northvale, NJ since the lines do cross each other across the border in Orangeburg, but NJT only wants to run light fail, er rail to Tenafly on the line. CSX will also have nothing to do with passanger service clogging up a major freight artery.

Best way to get passanger service to Newburgh is via the Stewart Airport spur proposal, extending it northeast along the old Erie Newburgh branch. Cost and NIMBYism makes that idea unworkable.
