Not a big deal really.Technically, yes they are wrong. But almost everyone I know refers (including myself) reffers to the whole West Side line as the 1 and 9. Even on a weekend, I'll say 'I'm takin the 1 'n 9 up to Times Sq', etc... The 1 and the 9 are so commonly paired, it's just that way. The Broadway Line has a similar effect. My father who used to work at the WTC and commuted via Ferry and BMT or IRT to WTC (or walked =P) always reffered, and still to this day reffers to both lines as either the 1 'n 9, or the N 'n R. Just subway slang I guess. |

I won't mind.I've ridden a 9 a few times, but I usually stick to the BMT (especially the W, which owns). The most times I use the ferry is when I go to MoD trips, and most MoD trips have been at Grand Central recenly. For getting to the East Side from SF, I take the R to Union Sq and take the IRT right up. Or, I just take the express bus. =) |

Best thing is that casual riders don't know what the hell you're talking about. :) But even I don't know what the hell you're talking about if you "take the IRT to 125th Street" - that involves three different possibilities - are you taking the 1'n'9, the 2/3, or the Lex? And once you get into the Bronx, it's the 1'n'9, the 2/<5>, the 5 (Dyre), the 4 (Woodlawn) and the 6 (Pelham). Now, if you tell someone you're taking the Sea Beach, the Culver or the Brighton Local down to Kings Highway, we all know what you're talking about, but the sheeple are perplexed :) |

They can't key-by that location?? It's a straightaway section of track and 1 station is in-view from the previous... and DAMN RARE do trains come out of the sidings there... I can't imagine why they'd need to KO service in that single small teeny weeny stretch.... you can see where you're going from 1 end to the other... restrict speeds and honk if you see workmen? o bless-- tell me they put up SHUTTLE BUSES to cover that 1-stop stretch. |

If you ride that stretch bet 137th Street and 145th Street(137 yard area) there are so many homesignals in both directions that call-ons have to be taken and given from 240 Tower and then the trains have to key by countless approach signals, its not as easy as you think.Those signals are real close to together at that so you need supervision down there to check the switches and use radios to help move those trains.So instead of that lock it all down and get the signal department down there to fix the problem. |

I dunno jeet about signals and tracks and switches but I would imagine that the tracks REMAIN in the same position as when the last nb/sb train passed over them.... therefore, I'd suggested the visible key-by. But if the diverting SWITCHES from the yard sidings would "Reset" or move themselves back to a non-straight position, THEN I can comprehend the need to cut off service in that sect. |

Well, that belief is supported by the many signed 9 trains seen during off-hours, so it's not entirely unreasonable. I myself thought the 9 ran most of the day, because I would always see them running in the mid-day and evening. Weekends were rare (and when I did see them it was usually on a consist with mix'n'match signage).But I'd bet that the people who think the 9 does run all day long have no idea what the difference between the 1 and the 9 is - oh something about that skip dealie - they skip something or other. Yeah, one of them skips something, and the other one doesn't. Wait, that doesn't make sense... All of which testifies to how useful the skip stop actually isn't... |
