I did some work for NRG, which owns the property. The car was demolished when the West Shore line was rebuilt through the yard; however, they have what looks like an old GE switcher on the property, painted yellow and blue and lettered for Con Edison. It's in a shed near the coal dump. The plant is oil fired, but has the coal 'option' that has never been used. The plant supervisor has no idea if any of the coal equipment will actually work, and it's all fenced off, even to company employees.

Hank, I will respect your privacy by not asking where you live, but this is the only way to contact you.

I, myself and others travel two hours or more each way when we go. One thing I have found helpful and enjoyable is to carpool with others who are heading up for the day.

Personally, I have met members at LIRR- Jamaica Station, Jewel Ave and the Van Wyck, Whitestone Lanes, Queens Surface (before the MTA takeover), Northern Blvd and the CIP and well as Pelham Bay (#6 line) in the Bronx.

If you want to we can either carpool or pick you up if you are near these spots.

Otherwise e-mail me privately and some of us can brainstorm a solution to your problem.

Well, now that he's been told by you, I'm sure he'll just hop in the car and drive up from San Francisco this weekend. After all, it's not like San Francisco's far from Branford, Connecticut, right?

So then 353 realy is gone ... many have said it was still there somewhere. And with 508 also gone, that leaves just the two at Seashore & Branford.

We have some folks who regularly come from South of you ... NJ, PA.
When we operate on a week-end we'll even do a overnight at Motel 6 ... about the cheepest place that is clean & convient.

Flash comes down from NH for a couple of weeks twice a year.

One fellow was active, then took a bunch of years off to have a family, now he's back with re-newed piss & viginar.

That doesn't dimish those members who help with cash & look forward to our monthly newsletter to see what we are doing with it.

I was there Sunday on my way back to LI ... just stopped by to have dinner with some friends. Two of them had been working on 388.

it is my understanding that at one time the sirt electric`s were hauled by steam to the con ed plant as a special shuttle for the workers.

At one time there was a spur between Pleasant Plains and Mount Loretto. SIRT would run special trains there on Sunday. The spur was non-electrified so the ME-1's would be hauled by a steam loco. This lasted at least until 1939.

There is a picture of this train in the booklet "Staten Island Rapid Transit" (1965) by Paul Matus.

Car 353 was still under TMNY control,it was marked for de-accession,but was waiting to whom it was going to.There was talk for it to go to the transit museum, to have a car from Staten Island;or to another museum(B+O,etc). When Con Ed moved control to another company,it put the car out of its yard. The last info was that a the car was moved, and cut up.This car did have a fire years ago, that is why no other museum wanted to take it.366 and 388 were better cars(less damage).

YES Larry a very 'rare' shot indeed. Too bad it wasn't a really clear photo the cars (ME-1's) were fairly new then.

Hank, there is one active member of the 388 stabilization crew who lives in (I believe) Bay Ridge. If you're interested in coming up to Branford, I can put you in touch with him. It would be a short hop over the VZ to the carpooling place. You can e-mail me privately if you'd like.....Just put something like BERA or BRANFORD in the subject line so I don't delete without reading.

Dear Mr. King:

1 - I did not know that the poster lives on the left coast, so your point about frequently visiting is well taken.

2 - No where in his post did he allude to the fact that his infrequent visit(s) are due to distance.

3 - My interpetation of his post was that the car was in deplorable shape and no thanks given to all the time and money that has gone into the stabilization of the car.

4 - No where does he say that hopefully in the 6 months since his visit that some work may have been done to move the project along.

As one who has been on ladders, sanding, scrapping and painting, his post seemed to ignore that any work was done. He just assumed that nothing was done since April. We all know what the word "assume" means.

When I go up to Branford, as a volunteer, all I ask for is a verbal "thank you" at the end of the day, whether its from the project leader, dispatcher of the person in charge of an event. As you can see, a presumptous post like that makes my blood boil.

Hart Bus

Well you have my thanks and also to the project leader who is trying
to keep the project under control and do things the right way.
Maybe this guy comes from a place ware it is warm all the time but
for us who can't get a shop space in the heated spot November to
April nothing gets done.
Long rainy summers are not much help for an out side car project.
Barns with out heat suck too even if you are working inside as they are damp and cold.
