BVE 2 Download

My computer crashed a few weeks ago and I am looking to reinstall BVE. The WMATA Route that I designed quite a few years back at this point is a .rw file that I am pretty sure only works in BVE 2, as opposed to the newer BVE 4. Where can I find a download of BVE 2 these days, or am I trying for the impossible?

Thanks, in advance.

Heh. You're most welcome! I'm really curious as to what he's going to do with that Vista/aero stuff in the upcoming 5 version. As it is, I've modified most of my own trainsets to remove all of the controls and cab stuff so my monitor serves as a vision glass with the 4 version - my setup has an actual arnine controller stand and brake stand, so I can see where my "knobs" are at "for real." MUCH more realistic sim that way. :)

WOW. How did you do that? You made your own drivers and software and hardware? I'm guessing, in order to convert the controller's position into some sort of computer signal. You really wired real controllers to be BVE controllers?

BVE 4 gives you the option of full screen, but BVE2 doesn't. I prefer BVE 2 because it loads faster, and has more options, and it tells where the markers are. I modify the performance of some trains to see how much better the systemcan be made. I modified an R32 to have good acceleration up until 40 or so MPH. I thought this type of performance was unrealistic for low voltage DC subway trains with resistor controls...Until I rode PATCO. If the performance of NYCTA rail stock was half that of the PATCO rail stock(in terms of acceleration at 20 MPH and higher), then the system would be a lot faster.

Though I have a BVE question: How do you change the time length for which the doors are held openned at stations? Most BVE routes keep them open for 20 seconds or more.

Real motormen don't need the "marker meter" on the side ... you know when you'll hit it. :)

As to using real subway stands with BVE, BVE offers three modes of operation - keyboard, joystick, and a special toy "operator panel" which was sold only in Japan. Instead of keyboard, set up BVE to use a joystick.

Went and bought a cheapass old joystick just to get the USB circuit board inside it. Joysticks use two 100k ohm potentiometers, one for X axis, one for Y axis (and others I don't need).

Arnine controller has a bunch of switch contacts. So I took 3 33k ohm resistors and wired up the controller handle to shunt each one from 100k ohms (power off) to zero ohms (ramming speed) ... wired up the reverser contacts, and then took a separate 200k potentiometer for the brake stand since I only needed about 1/3 of full rotation there. Controller is X axis, Brake stand is Y axis, hooked it all up to the USB board and voila! YOU can do it too! Moo. :)

Forgot the second question ... timing for the stops is a function of how far ahead your leader is, the TIME sections in the route map for when you're supposed to leave, and then what time you actually arrive at the stop. Jigger the departing times and you'll get what you want. Don't be late though or the geese will get jumpy. :)

Hmm...interesting. Though simpler than I expeced. You didn't need to make any program. But how do you convert the "resistance" into a USB signal so you can just plug it into a port? Looking at a USB 2.0 jack, I see one metal outer shell(a form of shielding, I guess), and four internal copper contacts embedded in plastic, which I assume do the "communicating."

Do you connect the controller contacts to two of these, and the brake contacts to the other two?

Heh. You're looking for too much complication here. If you open UP a USB joystick, those potentiometers are inside, hooked up to the joystick mechanically. These "pots" are wired up to a connector that goes to the chip on a circuit board which goes to the USB cable. I took the cable and the circuit board, and soldered up my fixed resistors and the switches in the controller plus an external pot to those pins. Nothing more to do than wire up that stuff and away you go ... everything you need is on the little circuit board inside the joystick.

You just use your own resistors and a pot for the brake handle and wire it up and throw away the joystick. Or keep it for spare parts for some other purpose. :)

AHA!!!! I see now, it is quite simple. You used the Joystick components(circuit board) THEMSELVES to turn the resistance into USB signals. I missd that part.
I should hav read this:
"Went and bought a cheapass old joystick just to get the USB circuit board inside it. Joysticks use two 100k ohm potentiometers, one for X axis, one for Y axis (and others I don't need).
"...more carefully.

Interesting, yet simple, thanks.

you can use BVE Route Randomizer, check the box that says developer mode, then you can use F6 to close the door in the station

Actually, I have been on trains that openned the doors, closed them and was on their way in about 10-12 seconds...during the day

Such times can be expected at low use stations, and at nightime(i'm pretty sure you know this). I would like to try to duplicate a "midnight run" scenario, so I can see what type of performance rolling stock would have to have in order to go from 168 to hudson terminal on the AA. Randyo said he did it with a real set of R32s once in about 25 minutes...ON THE LOCAL TRACK. Just want to see how fast the brightliners USED to be.

The *.RW and *.CSV files can be edited in notepad ... Alfred Barton used to have a site with all the details - mackoy's site still has all the details, but they're in Japanese. Our friend "Error" is hooked up with a BVE forum which might have the answers you need as to what to edit, I haven't done a route file in years and my memory of the various items is a bit hazy without spending some time reviewing it all. I used to write routes as well as train.dat files but it's been years now ...

Welllll ... FWIW, if you open up and nobody's on the platform and nobody gets off, you can close up pretty quickly. But you end up running "hot" only to be held for time somewhere along the way. As to the "accuracy" of BVE though, I wouldn't schedule a real railroad based on how BVE runs, particularly if you can't charge each station and stop on a dime with just one release. BRAKING is where you lose your time (aside from door holders) in the real world. And though the subway files and trains are fairly close, even my arnine isn't all that accurate ... BVE has limitations which authors try their best to work around.

Looking at the thousands of lines of info...I'm thinking writing routes was a PAIN, not a joke, assuming there is no editor. Not like that game Trainz where you just click, and drop tracks all over the place, and it adds turnouts for you too.

There ARE editors for it, but I do things the old fashioned way ... with a text editor. It's not so bad if you start out the route from line one. But I never cared for the assumptions the editors made. That's why BVE has developer mode so you can see where you're going to put the train on the ground (or worse, below it) ... heh.

If you look at schedules, you can see that they adjust the times for various times of the day(like bus schedules). I think they base it around how long the doors are held open, based on the number of passengers expected. I don't know exactly how it works, but I'm assuming that during midnight, it is expected that the CR opens the doors, waits a few seconds, and closes them, since there are fewer riders, so you shouldn't run "hot".

In my personal opinion, the NYCTA subway goes COMPLETELY TO THE CRAP HOLE during rush hours. It becomes a pain even to railfan. And the funny thing is that most of the delays, and reroutes have occured during rush hours from my experience. Even short turning a B train between west fourth and 34th...DURING PEAK to go back to Brighton. CPW expres goes to a crawl as well. And recently, probably because someone at managment has been jerking with numbers too much(bananas up the rear), PATH has been going down the toilet as well. Standing room only at 8:00 at night? They HAVE to be making profit here, and if they say they don't, they're probably LYING. I KNOW running a railroad can't be that expensive(unless you jerk around with the $$$$). And PATH maintanence isn't that great. Practically every train has FLATS on it, NO JOKE, and looking at all those loose screws I see, they've been running the cars with minimum maintanence for MANY years now(but those cars are well built, so they can take it). The only real work I have seen recently is crews replacing old incandescent signal bulbs with packs of LEDs.

At least MTA seems to keep the number of flats down, to their credit.

There's an official minimum "station time" on the doors ... I forget whether it was 10 seconds or 15 "off peak" but there IS a minimum. As to running a railroad, not my job title. :)
