Heh. You're looking for too much complication here. If you open UP a USB joystick, those potentiometers are inside, hooked up to the joystick mechanically. These "pots" are wired up to a connector that goes to the chip on a circuit board which goes to the USB cable. I took the cable and the circuit board, and soldered up my fixed resistors and the switches in the controller plus an external pot to those pins. Nothing more to do than wire up that stuff and away you go ... everything you need is on the little circuit board inside the joystick.

You just use your own resistors and a pot for the brake handle and wire it up and throw away the joystick. Or keep it for spare parts for some other purpose. :)
