Now you wanna talk about piece of $#!t looking el structures, take some REEEEEEEEEEAL good looks at the Atlantic Avenue Viaduct between Nostrand Avenue and East New York (LIRR)....not only have extra bracing supports have been placed to hold up portions of this structure, but driving along it last weekend gave me a good chance to view some portions having full fledged corrosion in the steel girders, in some cases it has eaten clean thru leaving holes!!

Hopefully while they are at it the butt ugliest station in the LIRR system can get a makeover too.

A bit. I've seen people leap into Atlantic Av traffic rather than use the designated passageway too.

But I was going to give the award for ugliest LIRR station to.....

NOSTRAND AV

Time for me to hit the sack, but someone can post pics of that hideous green monster windscreen they've got going on there, which gets this layer of crap seemingly growing on it from time to time. Other than that, sure it would be bland, but I find it tough to ignore that degree of awfulness.

Many of the original BMT el structures particularly in the Eastern Div lacked outside catwalks for many years. As late as 1969, when I was a M/M on the A line the former BMT Liberty Av structure had not yet had them installed. Most of the CTA el structures also lack outside catawlks to this day. In fact, the lack of outside catwalks on BMT el structures may well have been the reason why the BMT signal stop arms were located on the left hand side of the track instead of the right hand side as was IRT practice.

If you notice in that photo, since Atlantic Av is very wide at that point, the el structure was able to be placed sufficiently away from the sidewalks so that blockage of the sunlight is minimized. Since both 2nd and 3rd Aves in Manhattan have been widened since the removal of the origina els, a 2 track concrete structure aesthetically pleasing and with an appropriate noise mitigating roadbed such as in DC or the Kennedy Airtrain could be built without seriuosly compromising the openness of the area. Convincing the local gentry of that, of course is another matter but a good public relations agent with the capability of selling sand to the Arabs might be able to accomplish it.

If you're starting premise is that no viaduct is more aesthetically pleasing than an viaduct, then your thought makes sense. But aesthetic sensibility has never been the sole criterion on which we judge a project's merit.

Agreed but it is a very important criterion when it's planned to go thru highly valued residential and office areas and there are other alternatives available.

It's the natural beauty of the area that stands out, not the viaduct. I also doubt that the deer, raccoons and trees residing there had any input when the aesthetics of the structure was still in the public hearing phase.

True. Lets never forget that politically effective NIMBYism started when Jane Jacobs and other influential Manhattanites stood up to Robert Moses' planned expressway through Manhattan. The rest of the city saw how they did it and Moses was finished. Nobody in NY has dared to plan ambitious feather-ruffling transportation projects in NY since, with the exception of Westway and the Queens Super-Express train route and we saw how those ended up.

Well, romanticism aside, things had changed by the time that Robert Moses was going to construct his expressway through Manhattan. Moses had gratuitously screwed people over for speculative gain, and people were slow to forget. Obviously, the creation of the Wholly Ronan Empire - the MTA - also drastically cut and eliminated Moses' power.

There has always been politically effective NIMBYism for as long as there's been politics. Of course, with the factionalization of politics and the legalizing of American culture, effective NIMBYism is increasingly effective.

The concrete Flushing Line El structure over Queens Blvd, described bt the NYSPSC as an "ornamental" structure, is relatively aesthetically pleasing. Due to the width of Qns Blvd, like the LIRR Atlantic Av structure the Flushing line structure doesn't block out as much light as some other structures do either.

At the present time with the price of oil and gasoline reaching astronomical levels, the NIMBYs may not have as much of a choice as in the past. At some point, it will come to; If you want mass transit in your area, it will either be some sort of el structure or you can either walk or wait in the cold for a bus or do without entirely. All the whining and bellyaching in the entire universe won't produce money to finance more ambitious transportation projects when the wll has run dry and there is no funding for it anywhere. If I recall, WMATA had a similar problem where the local residents wanted a subway but due to funding limitations, and above groud line is now being built instead. Imagine the conflicts between neighbors when the people who would have settled for some sort of less desirable form of transit take out their vengeance on those whose NIMBYism caused a project to be abandoned entirely.

I wouldn't oppose a similar structure over a route on the scale of Queens Blvd since that street is almost expressway-like in its width.

Sorry to gravedig, not my type of posts, but I found this on the MTA's website. Thought to start this again rather than create a new thread. Also, apologies if this has been posted before.

Atlantic Avenue Viaduct Project
$93.4 Million Project to be Done on Weekends to Minimize Impact on Train Customers and Brooklyn Neighborhoods

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Helena E. Williams announced that the Atlantic Avenue Viaduct, which carries LIRR customers between Jamaica and Downtown Brooklyn, is about to undergo a major rehabilitation.

The 16-month project is the first of a two-phase plan to overhaul the viaduct with the work to be conducted on weekends only.

“Our goal is to restore this much traveled and critical stretch of Railroad infrastructure to a state of good repair and extend the service life of the viaduct to ensure safe and reliable service to our customers and the public,” said Williams. “We will achieve this with an absolute minimum amount of inconvenience to riders and to the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods.”

Work is scheduled to begin October 25, on the replacement of girders, beams and bracing as well as the upper portion of street columns supporting the structure. Built in 1901, the viaduct stretches about a mile and a half from Ralph Avenue to Nostrand Avenue, supported by 199 individual steel spans each of which are about 40 feet apart.

Phase I is scheduled for completion in January 2010 at a cost of $93.4 million. It will involve the replacement of 81 spans between Ralph Avenue and Troy Avenue and six spans between Kingston Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue. Work will progress east to west over approximately 36 weekends to minimize the impact on train travel and local street traffic. The LIRR will maintain normal train service throughout the project, at times operating on a single track.

In 2007, more than 25,000 customers traveled the line each weekday and another 16,000 on the weekend.

The project will require temporary street lane and intersection closures and traffic will be guided toward alternative routes to avoid construction areas. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists, the city’s Department of Transportation has agreed to provide Traffic Enforcement Agents at key locations as required.

Preparatory work will take place Monday through Friday. Demolition and replacement work will be done in 49-hour windows on weekends (including overnight) with tracks fully operable by Monday morning rush hour.
In addition to the replacement of the steel spans, new track will be installed along with new center and outer walkways. The viaduct will also receive a fresh coat of paint.

All I can say is, great news.
