At the present time with the price of oil and gasoline reaching astronomical levels, the NIMBYs may not have as much of a choice as in the past. At some point, it will come to; If you want mass transit in your area, it will either be some sort of el structure or you can either walk or wait in the cold for a bus or do without entirely. All the whining and bellyaching in the entire universe won't produce money to finance more ambitious transportation projects when the wll has run dry and there is no funding for it anywhere. If I recall, WMATA had a similar problem where the local residents wanted a subway but due to funding limitations, and above groud line is now being built instead. Imagine the conflicts between neighbors when the people who would have settled for some sort of less desirable form of transit take out their vengeance on those whose NIMBYism caused a project to be abandoned entirely. |
