The South Shore is also a freight railroad, hence the gantlet tracks.

It's always cool to see a train run adjacent to the highway.

Heading out to Michigan City at all?

South Shore has procured some Highliners, too. Those will be running in the road in Michigan City . . .

And of course, low platforms would have meant no gantlet trax ;)

Those would be hard to miss. The ends of the cars resemble the diesel push-pull gallery cars, and they have no end doors; they feature steps and trapdoors on half of the center door. They also have larger windows with semicircular-shaped ends.

Bob, the cars that the Port of Authority asked about are the new bi levels running on Metra Electric. There are only 26 of them and being AC propulsion, they are incompatible with the majority Metra Electric DC propulsion fleet, so they only run together, making them a "rare" find.

That aside, great shots....you really had a railfan's holiday. The responses here have shown me that there's some real interest here on the forum for what's in my back yard, to speak. I'll have to get out and photograph more.

A few corrections are in order, Olog-hai. Even if Bob had traveled all the way to Michigan City, he would have never seen the "new" NICTD bi level cars...the first one isn't expected until November of this year for testing. Revenue service won't be had until well into 2009.

Yes, "Highliners" is the approved nickname for ex IC/Metra Electric cars but it isn't known yet whether the NICTD cars will garner the same name tag. The new Metra Electric cars are included under the old name.

The NICTD cars are expected to run only as six car trains between Gary and Chicago, so they will seldom be seen east of there, like Michigan City, South Bend, etc. No "street running" either. And they will have end vestibules and stairs for low level platform loading.

To make matters worse it looks like they're rebuilding the Metra Electric's high platforms. Would have made a lot of sense between the new cars and station work to begin transitioning to a system compatible with the rest of the network and then begin working to get the entire network to some sort of level boarding low floor car.

As a rider of the IC in he 50s and 60s I couldn't disagree more. To me the IC in that era was the gold standard of mainline commuter service--fast, frequent, intelligent mix of locals, expresses, specials. Too bad Daley got Interstate money to build the Dan Ryan and simultaneously bulldozed so much of the South Side. I digress.

Still, high level platforms just seem the better idea. I was amazed when I moved to Philly in 65 to discover that PRR commuter trains were often low platform.

All I heard was that they were being procured. I didn't hear about them receiving any. When I said "will be running in the road", I was postulating into the future, don't worry about that.

Hmm. Don't understand that restriction. They allowed gallery cars all the way to South Bend, back when they borrowed Metra diesels.

I kinda like the look of the Nippon Sharyo EMUs, personally.

There will only be 14 NICTD bi-levels, yet they will add 15 percent to the total passenger carrying capacity. This is true only if they are used in the highest traffic load territory which is Gary to Chicago. Plus they cannot train with any present equipment. So maximum usage is two six car trains and two spares. If they were used east of Gary, that maximum "bang for the buck" wouldn't be realized.

Still, high level platforms just seem the better idea.

There is little or no difference between a level boarding low floor car and a high floor boarding car today. A level boarding low floor car is far more forgiving of unimproved station platforms than a high floor car with traps for low platform access ever could be. With a level boarding low floor car you can build up the platform to maybe a foot above the railhead to create a stepless entrance indistinguishable from a high platform. At stations which do not justify that expenditure the passengers only have to take two short steps up from the platform, as opposed to the 3 steep steps many Northeast commuters encounter when boarding from low platforms.

Given the vast number of stops to be converted it is likely better for Metra to go with a solution that minimizes the impact on those many small originating stations. According to their website Metra serves 230 stations, of which 49 stations, the Metra Electric stops, are equipped with high platforms. It would be far more cost effective in the long run to convert those high platform stops to low platforms and go with a level boarding low floor fleet to serve them than to try to convert the other 181 stations to high platforms. The service would not change, it'd just be easier to integrate operations eventually.
