Note also that GE cars seem to have more problems in the long run, like this article stated, all PATH cars are westinghouse controller, and have no problems. MTA went cheapo here. |

As I said, some sugar coated pap for the technically unenlightened. Keep in mind that after they put the snubber on the J/BDC tips, that did not solve the real problem with the propulsion. Following that, the JMR relays were replaced - still no great improvement. |

As I pointed out to our fellow poster, the article does NOT say that the problems were solved but that they HOPE that they have the fix with the snubber. Hoping and doing aren't the same thing, and conflating them is an unwise move. |

Only the F & R have the little mixture of R32 & R46, while the E is near 100% R32.Anybody who says the new cars (R142/142A/143/160) do not experience mechanical/technical problems is living in serious denial - one of the reason some of those units couldn't run for a while was all the glitches they kept experiencing. I don't know what the reason is, maybe its the vendor or the maintenance with the high-tech equipment that keeps them running with flaws. I remember being on an R160 on the N and at 57 Street the announcement all of a sudden said "due to a mechanical failure this train is out of service." This while the damn car was running! I forget the number of the car/consist - I was on the CI motor car. While I love the older SMEE and 1970's cars, I admit some of them look and sound done (especially some of the R32s, both Phase I and II.) But the new equipment hasn't exactly performed to expectations. |

Don't believe anything technical written in a lay paper. Bythe time it gets filtered through 7 layers of managers, PR people, reporters and editors, none of whom would recognize a "contactor" if they tripped on it, the story is basically devoid of any accurate technical content. |

During coast, the circuit isset up for dynamic braking, but the fields are shunted and the current regulator is set very low. The drag is imperceptible. The reason for this arrangement, as opposed to just leaving the circuit open for a true coast, is so that when dynamic brake is actually called by the movement of the brake handle, the proper amount of dynamic brake current (corresponding to the amount of brake effort desired) will flow almost instantly, without overshoot. |

That's just about it - I recall this famous quote that the physicist Richard Feynman made in being awarded a Nobel Prize when a reporter wanted him to explain in a few words what his winning work was, and Feynman responded with something like, 'If I could explain it to you in a few words, then I shouldn't have gotten the Nobel Prize for it!' Without a certain background and motivation, his general approach seems correct.Feynman made his comment in the 1960s and years later the economist James Tobin ended up embarrassing himself in commenting on his Nobel to the press answering the same sort of question roughly by, 'Well, it's based on the idea that you shouldn't put all of your eggs in one basket except it's more detailed.' Well, you can imagine how that went over in the press! |

Thanks for the explanation. The setup probably also inspires confidence in the engineer operating the train too, I'm sure, since one doesn't like to think of a lag before dynamic braking applies. |

I remember the name HYATT stamped on the axle support bearing assemblys of the R-21/22s and was able to find a great deal of interesting stuff on John Wesly Hyatt's contributions towards solving the old problems of hot, faulty, journals on equipment that preceded the SMEEs. It seems that the old codgers weren't ready to accept his ideas, a hundred years ago, and as a result, burning journals became the norm in freight yards and subways. |
