IIRC, it was more about unpopularity of the R which went local all the way to Manhattan instead of the E that it replaced, going express west of Forest Hills.

Sure as it used to. Before the 2001 service changes, the M/N/R all ran thru the Montague tunnel. I don't see why it cannot. The only reason the W doesn't enter Brooklyn is because there are 'too many lines going to Brooklyn' and for the W to enter southern BMT, one line would have to be cut back to allow the W to go south [likely the M].
But if the W were to say run on the Fulton line then it won't affect southern BMT service.

I always thought the E should've been extended to the southern BMT in place of the R after WTC to Cortlandt. And perhaps moving Broadway over to Nassau only if using the City Hall lower level so it can go under the 4/5 lines.

V is fine [of course if it was extended to either Church Av or somewhere on Eastern division] it would be better than to just end at 2nd Av. Plus the V technically could run on just 8 60'-car trains.
Otherwise the V is fine and does the job it's supposed to do while allowing E/F trains split off from each other and allow extra trains to run on those lines. Some people just hates the V cuz the F no longer goes to 53rd-Lex.

I see your points. The answer to your question as to why I think that local riders would prefer the (W) over the (C) is this: The (W) has better transfers in Manhattan. It would also serve Manhattan areas other then the 8th Av corridor. While people at the local stops seeking 8th Av would of course transfer to the (A/C), many express riders would transfer to the (W) at H-S. Loads would be balanced since the express would run more frequent and faster service (as it does today).
It has often been suggested on this board to flip the (C) with the (V) at W4 St. My plan would achieve better results because it wouldn't sacrifice Manhattan 8th Av local service or congest the Cranberry tunnels or cause a switching nightmare at W4 or decrease Downtown service for CPW, PABT and NYP riders and transferees. As for headways, with the (W) running at a combined 15 TPH in Astoria/LIC and Manhattan (the (N) would go up 2nd Av), one can run as many as 9-10 (W) thru Montague together with the (R)(M) without congesting that tunnel while turning the rest at Whitehall. Unlike QB Local stations, the Fulton Local probably doesn't even need that many trains. I think that the present (C) only runs at about 7 TPH there during the rush anyway.

I can agree with that. The reason I thought of an 18/6 (W) is that I'm not sure that the "stubway" will need both the (N) and (Q) on late nights and Sundays. If it does then IAWTP. Would you still have the (N) running Bway Exp and over the Manny B in those hours though. I would seem like expensive overkill. That's why I would have the (N) resume its current late night route to Astoria via Montague/Bway Local.

Great minds think alike. I'm not sure what to think of a Bway/City Hall link to the Nassau Line though. I would prefer to see unused capacity on Nassau used for a connection to a SAS service instead.

There is a big condo-type building as well smaller tenement like structures lying in the path of this cut in the area of Boerum Pl, Red Hook Lane, Livinston St and Schermerhorn St. Since this would have to be cut-and-cover construction in order to go under and then merge with the existing shallow trackage, it would probably require the use of eminent domain and demolition of some or all of these buildings. Another way to build this cut would be to deep bore it just east of the water line while it's still deep enough under Montague St to mine the tunnel and turn it unto Schermerhorn St west of the IND Court St stub. It would then have to emerge to cut-and-cover tunneling just east of there. This would probably require less disruption but be more lenghty and also cost more. It would also put the TM Station into revenue service.
I hope there are some engineer types here who can give a much better analysis of the work required then me.

I'd rather connect the Rathole to the Myrtle Avenue Line.

Nahh! One day when funds magically appear, I say extend the (1) to Brooklyn from South Ferry and run that into a new Myrtle Av Subway. It could be a TBM tunnel under Remsen St to Myrtle Av and beyond. The cut I proposed wouldn't require the kind of financing that will never materialize. It's a lot more like the 11th St Cut of the 1950s both in principle, results and in a similiar kind of neighborhood. H-S Station is a bit like Queens Plaza Station in many ways even though the work required would be more complicated.

Late Nights will see the (N) Shuttle on the Sea Beach to 36th Street or some such, and (Q) can handle the Bway Exp all by its ownsome.

If the (V) becomes 24/7 then the (R) becomes (R)edundant at night, and the (W) can be 24/7 to Fhort Ham.

I like the ideas Lion proposed a lot. The W should be a full-time train in Astoria anyway once the SAS is built to at least 96th, and the N and Q could both serve second avenue until the line goes south of 63rd.

After the SAS line is complete, if by then the Rockaway-Queens Super Express branch (that has been suggested in other threads) is also built, then I would look at perhaps making the N and a new K train the two lines on this route that would (as noted in previous threads) come into Manhattan via a new tunnel that would allow for a new station in Manhattan on 79th street and York-1st Avenues before then stopping under what will by then be the SAS station at 72nd/2nd before this branch splits up, with the K joining the T on the SAS to Water Street and the N joining the Q to 63rd/Lex and then the Broadway Line.

As I recall, there was a time when the N was in fact a shuttle from CI-36th in Brooklyn during overnight hours in the early '80s.

We will have flying cars and a permanent space station on Mars before the southern half is built. I'd be surprised if even the Stubway is ever built, no matter what the MTA says.

Actually I wanted to add on this idea and that should the R/W be shifted over to the Nassau line then they should use the lower level of City hall and abandon the upper level so it can be turned into a larger mezzanine.
then w/the downtown upper level track no longer being in the way, they can connect the R/W to the 2/3 station at Park Place [which is about less than a block away] via a corridor so riders from the R/W can use the 2/3 platform or maybe even an upper level mezzanine if possible to get to the A/C/E trains.

I agree, if they are going to make the R 24/7 then the N should be cut back, extend the Q to Astoria late at night and have it run local with the R or switch back with the R at 57/7th to go to Queens.

The connection with the 60th Street tunnel changed this and placed a Broadway train on the sacred rails of the IND.

Actually going by Edwards' idea to shift the R/W to the Nassau line and the E to take over the R line from Cortlandt on south, then there's no more a need to shift the SAS over to the Nassau line and they can leave it running down all the way on Water Street. The SAS can then use a separate tunnel and either run on the Fulton line [using the Court St station] or eventually run down Utica Av.
The E alone would justify the use of the Montague tunnel w/out the need for the SAS.

They won't have to abandon the station, but rather close one platform and open up the lower level at City Hall which needs major rennovations, but otherwise is in ok condition about the same level as the current Chambers St station on the J/M lines.

Negative...

Trains go through the Chrystie Street Cut all the time when needed..

Mostly Miscellaneous and a few transfers..

No. Add a little bit of R service. Just 1.5 trains-per-hour over the course of the day would be a relief. Say maybe 24 additional R intervals out of Continental, all turning at Whitehall would be better.

Adding the V is unrealistic. Not only in terms of additional crews needed, but management too. Gotta think of these things.

Repairing the viaduct or just the station the F/G train currently uses.
