The line that ended in Nyack was the NRRNJ (Erie) that lost its passenger trains in 1966.

Hmmmm, interesting. Anyone know what condition it's in? Is re-introducing passanger service warranted?

Thanks for the info.

I agree with your other points, and my point was basically to suggest what you also feel should be done, namely,

If the improvements to the line are sufficient along with electrification, the 60-mph speed limit could come up to 80 mph to match the rest of the NJCL.

The diesel portion of the NJCL is littered with grade crossings, almost as far apart as streets in Manhattan are. Ridership south of Asbury Park is minimal anyway. Bay Head NIMBYs will bitch about electrification, since they bitch about everything.

I'd extend the wire to A.P. There's a mini-yard there to boot.

The electric motors still out-accelerate the diesels, so average speeds would rise

Anything to improve acceleration would help given the somewhat frequent station stops on the lower part of the line, and the periodic speed changes due to the drawbridges. If NJT could sprinkle some capital funds for higher speed drawbridges too...

Why? They have money. Doesn't that make them better and more important?

With the exception of Mt. Olive and Hackettstown, opened in December 1994.

And these are the GE U34CH and Comet I cars that began service in 1970.

Speaking of Mount Olive, does ANYONE use it? The parking lot is tiny, it appears that half of the cars are NJT employees and there is literally NOTHING anywhere near it. Hackettstown has far more potential destinations, yet it gets hardly any service.

In my experience, the diesels don't appear to go any slower south of Long Branch than the electrics do north of it, especially south of Perth Amboy.

The diesel NJCL consists are usually rather shorter than the electric ones, if I recall correctly, except for some summer season trains?

It depends. Many of the weekday Bay Head diesels are long trains which at some point in their schedule run to/from Hoboken. The 8:30 from Hoboken is usually 7 cars long. It becomes the 11:03 to Long Branch, then the 12:19 to Bay Head before heading back to Hoboken (as the 2:23) where I'm sure it runs back to Bay Head to lay up for the night.
