I agree with you for the most part. It's a little wierd to encounter in person (different traction motor sounds, clueless passengers staring at the foreign stripmaps in confusion, etc), but really not newsworthy. Admittedly it would be nice to get some photos of these cars running on different lines since my R62 and R142 pages (if I ever get around to putting them up) will end up having big clusters of photos of them on one line, the line they're assigned to, which looks a bit boring, but I'm not coming all the way back up there just for that.

I agree. Personally, I have no interest in the differences between an R62 and an R62A, or an R142 and an R142A, anymore than I gave a damn about the differences between an R27 or an R30, and at least those were different classes, not just different contracts.

I think we're discussing two different things entirely.

Did the train I saw this morning on the 2 look dramatically different than the ones I usually see on the 2? Of course not. But a train's worth of cars was moved (from the 6, I think). Why? What's going on?

(Perhaps you're not interested. That's fine. But if some posters are interested, why shouldn't they discuss it?)

Sure, I suppose it's hypothetically possible that a train of R-142A's was moved from the 6 to the 2 to make service -- just as it's possible that a train of R-38's is moved from the C to the M to make service. Neither one is very likely, however.

It really dont make a difference what train pulls in to a station (as long as it runs.) But when you see something like a 142A on the 2 or a 62A on the 4 (I did ride a R62 (6) about 10 years ago, but thats another story) It is worth taking a look, but if the equipment can run correctly, I can care less what they swap. Sure take an OOS 6 and route it via the 5 to Flatbush and then sign as a 2. But so far if it is an R142A it is likely from the 6 the one from Sept 29th was from the 6 and the one I saw yesterday was also from the 6.

We're talking at two different levels.

Of course, an R-142A train will run on the 2, just as (here you go, Chris) an R-38 train will run on the M. Most of the passengers won't notice or care. (When an R-68 train runs on the B, the only problem the passengers encounter is in locating the door closest to their exit.)

But some posters are interested in car movements: which cars are going where, whether those moves are temporary or permanent, and, perhaps, most interesting of all, why the cars are moving in the first place.

If you're not interested in car movements, then don't read threads dealing with car movements. There are lots of threads here I don't find interesting, and I simply don't read them. As long as it's on-topic, I'm not going to complain about a thread that I happen to find boring.

Happens on the IRT exceedingly rarely.

And considering that the 4 and 1 don't even come close, I doubt the 4 would "simply" borrow a car off the 1. Maybe the 5 or the 6 or the 3 or even the 2.

As I've been saying, it's about as likely as the M borrowing a train off the C to make service. It just doesn't happen.

You've explained why R-68A's sometimes run on the B and R-46's sometimes run on the E. That's not what's happening here.

The 38's began appearing on the M in 1981, then spread to the QB, D and even R. I was riding to school everyday, and just beginning to get familar with all the different types of equipment, and noticed these cars that loked like a cross between the 32's and 42's. A year later, they all suddenly disappeared, and turned up on the A where they remained to the present.
Many don't believe that 38's and even 32's ran on the M, but it seems the assignments were done a bit different than the way they are done today, where the D is strictly out of Concourse. The M/QB/RR and to a large extent, the B all seemed to share the same equipment, based out of CI. (The B was kind of different whn it began to get the slants the same year, but even those eventually spread to the other lines). I am not familar with many of the other lines outside the Brighton before that time, but if it's true that the 38's had already been on the B, it was probably the slants spreading over from the A/AA that pushed the 38's to the other lines. Then the slants followed, and the 38's went to the A, so it was a swap.

There are four people in the photo wearing sunglasses. Which, if not all, are 'horrible'? Just keep in mind this was seven years ago. Styles in sunglasses have changed.

For the record, yours truly is in the back wearing my trusty drugstore clip-ons. On my left wearing the cap is our own Alex L. On the far right is our own BMT Guy. Immediately to his left in the green shirt is Forgotten New York maven Kevin Walsh.

The guy with the matching black-and-white bag and T-shirt is our own RIPTA Tunnel. The head to his left belongs to our own Peter Rosa. The fellow to my right in the blue jacket is Faxman, who was a regular fixture on the old Subtalk. I don't know if he made the move over to Subchat under a different handle. The turned head to the right of him belongs to our own Heypaul. I don't recall if Robert or Robert Junior (on the far left) were, or have since become Subtalk/chatters. Back in 1999 Subtalk gatherings were still a new concept. Now many of us can spot each other on sight from a distance.

We do look like a motley crew, don't we? I'm sure innocent passersby wondered why a bunch of people would pose for a picture under an elevated expressway.

Hahaha. I went to the High School right next to the Metropolitan Ave, and that HS is a railfan's dream!! We had the subway going back and forth all day long on one side of the building, and the occasional Conrail train next to the M trains.
Then the other side (back) of the building had the LIRR going back and forth all day long on the Montauk Branch, which included deadhead passenger moves, engine moves, freight, etc. And to top it all off, in the distance you could see LIRR Fresh Pond yard, and switching all day long in the freight yard.

Let me tell you, when those B23-7 Conrail engines (usually 3, and those are the ones they used to use on that line) would come by on the NY Connecting RR, you certainly knew it, the entire building shook. If you were in class in that side of the building, the teachers sometimes had to stop talking for a minute or two to allow them to pass. And then 50+ car freight train!

That school was truley a school in the middle of RR tracks! You as a teacher would even have been distracted!!

The R38's were rare, but I did ride them there. The R32's were much more common, especially around 1985 or so (give or take a year). Our mainstay was R27-30's, but we also had the R16's (which came and went off and on), and always had some R40M-42's (grafittied) thrown in, and also the fairly common few trainsets of R40 slants. But the R32's were no strangers to the M in the early to mid 1980's either. And yes, the R38's were splashed in there too, but a little less often than the other 60 foot cars.
I have never seen an R10 there, but back then, I wouldn't have been able to distinguish it from an R16 (I didn't think about it). I don't think I ever remember seeing them there though.

What years are you referring to? When I attended E.R. Murrow High School in the mid 70's, the M and the QB were mainly R-27/30's and a few R-42's.

As I said in the other post, yes, our mainstay was the R27-30's, some R16's, and the occasional R40-42, but by the 80's, we definitely had the R32's and occasional R38's thrown in too. I remember it clearly. I think since the M mingled at Coney Island, they just threw anything on it that operated out of Coney Island. The M didn't lose it's Coney Island status until the Manhattan Bridge project that threw it off the Brighton and onto the West End. That's when the M lost a lot of it's color. It even lost the R40-42's then! It went to straight R27-30, and later, straight R16 for a half a year or so, truly the barrel's bottom at that time, until the red R30's began to arrive (long after the J got them), and later still when the GOHed R42's and R40 Slants began to come around 1989 or so.
