Graffiti did not develop in the 1960s. It went through a reform in the 60s, yes. It was this reform that turned graffiti into a dirty word. Despite the reform, it is still defined as art. It is when it is placed on property without that properties owner's consent that it becomes vandalism. Graffiti has existed since early Greece and Rome. Do some reading buddy

I'll agree that the silver and blue scheme wasn't that bad on subway cars except for the R7/9's that had it. It looked great in the early 1970's when it was freshly applied, but then came the grime and later the graffiti that really ruined it. Also the pistachio green scheme in the interior of the cars wasn't THAT bad. I've been in buses that had that scheme and I liked it as a kid.

No he wasn't. If he was, he would have noticed that the worst thing on the subways was not crime, mechanical troubles, or lack of funding, it was graffitti. Graffitti was the single worst problem in the subway. Had it not been allowed to take root, the system still would have been broken, unsafe and unreliable, but this wouldn't have matteres, because it would have looked nice.

Your analogy makes no sense.

Let's be clear, some systems in Europe have Graffitti issues, and yet they are not like the NYC subway was in the 80s. But if you elect to operate a train in spite of the graffitti on it, that doesn't mean that tomorrow, you'll elect to operate a train with door problems tomorrow. Or that you'll stop trying to catch criminals in the subway.

Blech. No it isn't.

IMO, the best paint scheme was the aqua and white scheme painted on some cars. I also like the original color of the R-10s: it was the first change from the nasty, solid colors of the R1-9s. It's a shame that the R16 would go right back to solid color garbage.

Placing TAGGS on a subway car is selfish..bastardized way of showing the "world" how MOMMY didn't let you scrawl on the walls at home..so you need to do it ELSEWHERE...

Grow up and realise that it is an unacceptable form on PUBLIC/PRIVATE property WITHOUT permission.

Everything was filthy, crumbling, and exuded the hint that further danger lurks not too far away. You always felt like a lamb going to slaughter, either as a target on a platform, or subject to roving gangs of wolf packs or mechanical breakdowns on the trains themselves. The whole system either smelled of something burning, or of urine.

Each night on the news, there would seemingly be some new screwup either caused by mechanical breakdown (more like the machine just couldn't take it anymore and outright disintigrated), or by the ingenuity and ferocity of the crime detailed. I remember the story of some idiot running around Ely Avenue with a meat cleaver. He wasn't caught for some time before doing a lot of damage to straphangers.

Graffitti was responsible for none of these things. As you mentioned in another post: yes, graffitti is a maintenance issue. But, non-removal of graffitti does not automatically mean that people are not doing maintenance. What lead to the decay of the system was the fact that nobody was doing anything. OTOH, if graffitti was not addressed, while other maintenance was performed, you would have a system that still works.
