Trackways at Woodhaven Blvd

Posted by //ROOT on Tue Dec 27 22:11:42 2005

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
I was riding the Queens Blvd local today, looking for the abandoned trackways toward the LIRR Rockaway Line at 63rd Drive and to the terminal station at Roosevelt Avenue.

Then at Woodhaven Boulevard I noticed something I didn't expect. A trackway branched off the local before the station and seemed to run on the other side of the station wall. Then, after passing the station, the trackway rejoined the main line. There were trackways on both sides (71 Av-bound and Manhattan-bound).

Anyone know anything about these?

Those are bellmouths. They do not go behind the station. It was mention here that those were for the possibility of conversion of Woodhaven to an express stop.

If Woodhaven WAS an express stop, and 71st WASN'T, where would you put the next express stop, eastbound (after Woodhaven)? Or would you just have it go Roosevelt -> Woodhaven -> 71?

The LIE went as far as being designed..

When the bottom dropped out, this line, just like the following..were put to pasture.

Utica Avenue subway
Second Avenue subway Sections A,B and C
Avenue C Connector
Nostrand avenue Extention
Queens Super Express
Rodgers Junction Rebuild
Canarsie Line Relocation
48TH st subway
New Third Avenue line
Co-op City extention
Livonia avenue extention
Southeast Queens subway Extentions.
Direct Manhattan/JFK raillink via the Atlantic line/Mahattan Bridge/Rockaway branch.

The other project that sunk even faster was the new rail terminal under 3rd avenue and 48th st...

Nice..

I addressed this on my fantasy map.

Union Tpke. would be the eastern terminus for locals. Continental would be a local stop, Woodhaven an express. So the E/F would run from Queens Plaza to Roosevelt Ave to Woodhaven Blvd and then to Union Tpke.

"Jamaica Yard" would be moved west....maybe even into Jamaica itself.

Still, Continental is a good choice for an express stop because of the terminal aspects and location of the Jamacia yard. It should not be a case of Continental or Woodhaven as an express stop.
Woodhaven, local now, possible express in the furtue!
As an express, Woodhaven would kill the Queens Blvd Dash.

Its a piece of cake when effective infrastructure planning coincides with the building of a new subway line. As the photo shows, Queens Blvd was mostly open space when the subway was built. The line allowed this development to take place. The opportunity for such construction is scarce today because many parts of every borough except for SI were built up without any thought of rapid transit going through them.

Canarsie Line Relocation Proposal Circa 1968

From the October, 1968 New York Division ERA Bulletin "On September 20, 1968 the city Board Of Estimate approved the construction of several subway routes, reported to be the greatest at least since the dual contracts of 1968. The approved routes(13 in all, real fantasy map stuff here) are:

20- Elimination of the the Present BMT Canarsie Line south from Broadway Junction to Rockaway Parkway and relocation along the proposed Queens Interboro Expressway, which would run parallel to the present line to near Linden Blvd(Between New Lots and East 105 Street Stations) the Queens Interboro expressway would join the proposed Cross Brooklyn Expressway. The replaced Canarsie Line would then turn east along the Cross Brooklyn Expressway, which would run Parallel Flatlands Ave Ave and terminate near the Queens-Brooklyn Border."

There was also an 'A' branch which would run west along the 'CBX' to an unknown terminal, using a 'to be determined conveyance.

Such a line would screw the passengers to or from Rockaway Parkway Station.

You're right. The Board of Estimate did propose new subway lines (I thought it was 11, not 13, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were 13) without stopping to think about just where in hell they'd get the money.

Even counting the 4 for 1 federal match which San Francisco and Washington used to get their systems started, there couldn't possibly have been enough money for 13 new lines. Maybe two or three full length ones if everything had been handled right and NYC hadn't been diving into bankruptcy. The Beame Shuffle, the most moronic thing an NYC Mayor ever did, forfeited $1 billion in federal funds in the 1970s. Had that event not happened, one full-length line (say, the Archer Av project or the 63rd St project) would have been implemented as originally intended.

2.2-3 fewer B-1(2) bombers @ 2 billion a copy could pay for lots of actually useful projects.
3. From what was quoted one thinks the plan was to get most of the ROW built as a highway project having learnt from Richard (Daley) I

You make an interesting point on Daley's use of highway money to help get a ROW established, but, no your other points are wrong. SF notwithstanding, it wasn't prudent then and it isn't prudent now to forfeit federal matrching funds. SF started without it but got the money later. NYC forfeited because it moved money to its operating account. And the military budget had nothing to do with it either; the billion dollars was there for the asking, and Mayor Beame turned it down.
