How come no one started a thread about a man dragged to death by an A train?

Posted by LuchAAA on Tue Sep 29 10:37:31 2026

It happened last night at Utica Ave on a Manhattan-bound A train.

I hate when the media says "northbound". It would be easier to say "Manhattan-bound A train at Utica Ave".

Anyway, a man's backpack got caught in the doors and he was dragged to his death.

If this was an R211, I wonder if this would be the first fatality associated with this car model?

The media doesn't know. All they're doing is copy-catting the police report.

For reporting purposes, all NYCT trains are traveling northbound or southbound regardless of the actual direction of travel.

Incidents like this make me glad that I retired.
In cases like this, shit rolls up hill.
Interview the crew!
Conductor, were you observing the platform after closing?
When was that car last inspected?
Who inspected the doors?
Who was the Supervisor?
Gauge each door with a supervisor and detective?

Question: Is that station platform on a curve??

No.

Utica Ave is straight.

Most of the IND stations were built as straight as possible for speed, especially express stations. They wanted to improve on obvious flaws in the BMT design.

But there are exceptions like Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike on the E and F lines. There is a slight curve, and this station had a drag death a few years ago.

So did Columbus Circle on the 1 train.

The young high school girl who is interviewed, completely goes off of the conductor.

Now they say it was a shopping bag, not backpack stuck in the doors. Makes sense. NYC is known for traveling grocery shoppers buying at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

How come you start threads and then complain about nobody starting a thread on the subject, #37? Can't you be content with just being the person who started the thread? 🙄

T'wasnt a few years ago but the poor woman was slammed into the wall at the south end of the Union Tpke station at over 30 mph. IIRC it was around 1986 or 1988 and was the incident that gave rise to the door obstruction sensing program.

It might have been a homeless EDP who was dragged.

Still so many questions.

How far was he dragged? What car of the 10 car train was involved?

Associated Press

Man is dragged to death by a New York City subway train after his bag snags on a door

A man was dragged to death by a New York City subway train when a bag he was carrying got stuck in the door during the Monday evening rush hour commute, police said.

Yaw Boahene, 57, was exiting the train at a Brooklyn subway station around 6 p.m. when his bag, which police described as a shopping bag, snagged in the closing train doors. The Brooklyn resident was pulled onto the tracks and run over by the train as it left the station, police said in a statement.

Officers arrived to find Boahene “unconscious and unresponsive” on the train tracks, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death. The police investigation is ongoing.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the subway system, said both the train operator and conductor have been removed from service, as is routine while the investigation continues. The agency said the train was one of the fleet’s newest models. It was inspected after the man’s death and also previously in July, and no mechanical issues were found.

Dragging deaths happen from time to time on the nation’s largest subway system. In 2022, a 20-year-old commuter was killed after his backpack or a piece of his clothing got stuck in the door as he was trying to get onto a train at the Columbus Circle station in upper Manhattan.

How come no one pulled the cord? If that happened, that might have saved the poor soul's life. Isin't that the sole purpose of emergency cords in the first place, to stop the train when someone is being dragged? Are they even emergency cords on this model car?

Pulling the cord by passengers to activate the emergency brakes would do nothing until the train got to the next station.

It's a "safety feature" built into the R211's so a train wouldn't go BIE in between stations. Passengers have been known to pull a cord in between stations for a sick passenger, which of course delays things.

The conductor can pull the cord anytime, including when a train is leaving a station and emergency brakes will activate.

Technical correction: naturally an R211 can go BIE in between stations for reasons other than a cord being pulled by a passenger.

What I cant understand is why the conductor didnt see the person being dragged in the first place. As for pulling the cord when no emergency exists, that happens along with knuckleheads (drunk?) pulling the cord when they miss their stop. But for 5 non emergency pulls v/s one life saving one, its worth stopping the train IMO. You dont know if an emergency exists until the train stops.

There's always something off in news reports of this type.

A typical shopping bag wouldn't cause a drag, it would have to be a bag you can't instantly let go, such as messenger style. But there are big-box store bags you carry like a messenger bag. Even then you should be able to release it ... unless you're knocked woozy at the start of the trouble.

I believe he was. The late Joe Brennan catalogued all he had discovered. My description f 2nd Ave dates from 66-70 when that was my default station as ived on E7th facing tompkins Sq Pk.
As a kid in Chicago, I was crious about the bellmouths (did not kniw the term then) immediately south of the Roosevelt Station under State Street. Today, those have been extended to feed "Red Line" trains out to the Dan Ryan median.
