Another LIRR Elmhurst reopening story by CBS 2 NY.

Posted by LuchAAA on Mon May 25 21:25:35 2026

Honestly, I think it has a good chance of happening.

I'd like to see Corona reopen too, but on Junction, not on National where the old LIRR station was.

It would be a tight squeeze to fit in side platforms above Junction Blvd. 44 Av and 45 Av are right next to the retaining walls, unless they cantilever the platforms over the street.

My prediction: it ain't happening.

I think Elmhurst LIRR stop will return.

Some more luxury high rise condos will continue to open in that neighborhood plus the ones there.

As for Corona, that's a pipe dream. You're right that Junction would be a tight squeeze. There was once a station on National St. There would be room there but it would be a far walk to the Q72 or Q23 buses. It's in the middle-of-nowhere.

The MTA will fight tooth and nail to not reopen Elmhurst. Its not just a simple "reopening", it calls for a ground up ADA compliant reconstruction with elevators.. They'll cry there's no $$$ available for starters.

It’s useless. It would only serve a purpose for reverse commuting, since the station is close enough to Manhattan by subway that the LIRR isn't useful, and it has a really limited passenger base, how many people live within walking distance of the station who need to reverse commute specifically on the PW line?

On top of that they would have to find a place to install elevators and associated equipment.

Why should they be catered to with a massive expenditure of taxpayer money and how many of them live in Elmhurst and work near Penn Station or Grand Central?

NYC is changing.

High rise condos have popped up everywhere and continue to do so.

That neighborhood is one neighborhood that has new condos and more are coming. This demographic will pay for LIRR.

Anyway, the M and R do offer decent service, during the week. On weekends, Queens residents are frustrated with R local service.

I think it would work. These young people who work in IT and Ai or whatever might support a quicker ride from Elmhurst to Manhattan.

Right now, I think an investigation into gentrification of East New York should be a thread.

I was the MN ticket agent at 125th St in the mid 90s. Come commutation time I'd sell several dozen 125-GCT monthly comm come the first of every month. Often I'd ask why are spending so much more $$$ just to get to midtown. The Lex Ave Sta is just a block away & its swamped with cops. The answer was twofold. One answer was I had a bad experience on the subway. The other answer is I knew of someone who got mugged and I don't want that to happen to me. All it takes is it just has to happen once & the mind is made up
Well...its their money.

Up until 1992 when I left "the hole", I would hop on the Metro North at 125th and ride it to GCT if I didn't want to take the subway en route to Union Square. TBH, while it was stress free, I really didn't save time having to walk up a long block W/B on 125th, then wait for a train, then at rhe terminal, walk to the Lexington subway and wait for the first S/B train. I only wound up doing it about 4-5 times.

No, they won’t. LIRR would not be meaningfully faster here.

Weekends are also when the LIRR runs less often. It would be a better investment to run the M 7 days a week.

People in Forest Hills prefer the LIRR over the subway. And Forest Hills is an express stop.

If more luxury condos keep being built those residents would support a faster ride to Manhattan.

Jim: I remember that. I was the head clerk in station accounts and we always saw a few of those tickets. There were also about 40 or so monthly tickets for the Wall Street Express bus.

National Avenue, formerly Grand Avenue, is the traditional main road into Corona. It is much more convenient for persons destined for central Corona, compared to Junction Boulevard. Arguably, 104th Street is slightly closer to central Corona than National Avenue. But National Avenue is both the traditional road and convenient to central Corona, and its infrastructure is best able to accommodate a restored Corona station. The reasons to keep the station at National Avenue outweigh those for moving it to Junction Boulevard.

They already have a station, so the investment was done long ago. Why should taxpayer money go to serve a small minority that prefers the LIRR?

Opening LIRR & MNCRR station stops inside NYC & where NYCT provides rapid transit service is only a stop gap for what is truly needed, more rapid transit line expansion & service.

Adding new stations to commuter railroad lines within the NYCT rapid transit serving area only kicks the can down the road and avoids the inescapable truth, NYC needs to add additional new rapid transit lines, not just branch extensions to existing corridors.

Well, in this case it's reopening an old station. One that coexisted for years with the IND.

Honestly there is nothing wrong with people having a choice between the NYC Subway and LIRR or MNRR.

You have a cool handle. "HANDBRAKE". Have you ever cranked a handbrake on a train?
