World Cup attendees to The Meadowlands looking at a $100 fare to and from Penn Station

Posted by Wallyhorse on Wed Apr 15 23:39:29 2026

Looks like because of various demands from FIFA and their refusal to help fund this, people planning to go to World Cup matches in The Meadowlands are looking at a $100 fare from Penn Station to get there,

I wonder if when this deal was originally made I believe in 2018, New Jersey planned to absorb this themselves before COVID caused mass retirememnts on top of those who died from COVID, with it now likely far more overtime is likely to be needed for the service the way FIFA wants it than was planned when deals were made. Normally, tickets for this service are $12.90

NJ Governor Mikie Sherilll is making clear she wants FIFA to foot the bill for this. It appears if nothing is done, NJ Transit is going to have to prevent losses by recovering costs 100% through the farebox to prevent regular fares from skyrocketing, again due to FIFA's demands.

Nobody's going to go anyway, except for troublemakers from abroad.

IAWTP. Soccer, like rugby, is not a real sport played by actual athletes. Rather, soccer is a game played by grown-ups without any athletic ability other than to run around and kick the ball and then writhe in pain on the ground after getting touched on the forearm before being carted off the pitch in agony on a piece of plywood held by a couple quote paramedics close quote.

To wit, yesterday the Arsenal Gunners played something called Sporting. That riveting tilt nearly broke the record for combined goals scored in a single tilt as opposed to the aggregate and that includes the meaningful International and Club Friendlies. The final score was nil nil. Anyway, IAWYP.

I was actually watching both quarterfinal UEFA Champions League matches yesterday, Arsenal (who barring a total collapse will win the Premier League) did what they had to do to win yesterday, And it's a lot more difficult to control the ball without being able to use your hands. Much greater skill and they do run into each other a lot.

World Cup attendees: $150 round trip by train, $80 by bus to/from The Meadowlands

Posted by Wallyhorse on Fri Apr 17 13:53:26 2026, in response to World Cup attendees to The Meadowlands looking at a $100 fare to and from Penn Station, posted by Wallyhorse on Wed Apr 15 23:39:29 2026.

We now know that NJ Transit between Penn Station and The Meadowlands for the World Cup will cost $150 round trip and bus tickets will cost $80 round trip.

NJ Governor Mikie Sherrill had made clear she does not want regular commuters to foot the bill for this. Part of these excessive fares I believe is FIFA's security demands that cut off most of the parking in The Meadowlands as well as I believe FIFA wanting trains to operate between Penn Station and The Meadowlands without requiring those at Penn Station to have to transfer between trains at Secaucus like they normally would. That likely requires I believe two train operators due to a necessary change of direction of Secaucus that needs to be done quickly. With I believe NJ Transit still seriously below pre-COVID staffing levels having not replaced all of the operators who retired in some cases prematurely due to COVID on top of those who died from COVID in 2020 and '21 and ridership apparently still well below pre-COVID levels, NJ Transit I believe was forced to either do this or pass along massive fare increases to regular commuters they likely did not expect to need to when these deals were done in 2018 before COVID hit and even after adjustments in 2023 likely due to not being able to get staff back to pre-COVID levels.

FIFA is furious. They sent out a presser today comparing the cost to every other city hosting World Cup games, and it's embarrassing for NJ Transit.

This is something Peter Rosa posts about on OT. The idea that it's so hard to do business in the northeast compared to other parts of the country.

FIFA should put out a cost of World Cup tickets compared to other major sporting events. Ticket prices are ten times more than just the last World Cup 4 years ago. I guess that fifa wants to be the only organization that's price gouging.

But yeah, they likely wouldn't have given "NYC" the final had they known this.

FIFA always tries to extort local governments and businesses to try to get what they want.

Then they tried to do this to (checks notes) New Jersey.

Anyway, regular readers will note that I support so-called “price gouging.”

I wonder if they are overpricing. A lot of foreigners aren't going to want to travel to the US.

They need to make up the costs of these trips via the farebox:

As said, IMO the Murphy administration, who signed this agreement in 2018 thought they would be able to absorb the hit but that was before COVID hit two years later and during 2020 and '21 there were mass retirements that in some cases were up to 15 years before they intended to retire on top of those who died due to COVID. Even adjustments made in 2023 likely did not account for how massive those retirement were and STILL not being able to replace everyone who retired even in 2026 as well as ridership still being way below pre-COVID levels. Also, demands FIFA have since made for security in light of what has been going on in the Middle East as well as likely those simply looking to cause trouble also IMO caused this. My understanding is FIFA is insisting on direct trains between Penn Station and The Meadowlands and that required changing directions at Secaucus that in turn requires two train operators, further increasing the costs.

Huh?

Are you telling us that there is a track link between the Northeast Corridor line and the Hoboken to Suffern line in Secaucus?

Thanks for quoting this.

WTF!

There isn’t a direct connection and in any case I highly doubt FIFA had any insistence about a 1 seat ride.

Well, there are going to be considerable restrictions before and after games prevent many regular NJ Transit trains to go to Penn Station, which is why apparently PATH is going to honor NJ Transit tickets during World Cup matches. Regardless of whether they could change directions at Secaucus or have everyone transfer between trains there, it's going to prevent regular trains from operating through to Penn Station, and even more so if two trains are required between Penn Station and Secaucus and they need to transfer up to 40,000 people per match between two platforms.

The FIFA World Cup is coming to New Jersey! It's all here: fast-kicking, low scoring, and ties? You bet! You'll see all your favorite soccer stars. Like Arriaga, Arriaga 2, Barriaga, Aruglia, and Pizozza!
