Posted by Wallyhorse on Fri Apr 17 13:53:26 2026, in response to World Cup attendees to The Meadowlands looking at a $100 fare to and from Penn Station, posted by Wallyhorse on Wed Apr 15 23:39:29 2026. We now know that NJ Transit between Penn Station and The Meadowlands for the World Cup will cost $150 round trip and bus tickets will cost $80 round trip.NJ Governor Mikie Sherrill had made clear she does not want regular commuters to foot the bill for this. Part of these excessive fares I believe is FIFA's security demands that cut off most of the parking in The Meadowlands as well as I believe FIFA wanting trains to operate between Penn Station and The Meadowlands without requiring those at Penn Station to have to transfer between trains at Secaucus like they normally would. That likely requires I believe two train operators due to a necessary change of direction of Secaucus that needs to be done quickly. With I believe NJ Transit still seriously below pre-COVID staffing levels having not replaced all of the operators who retired in some cases prematurely due to COVID on top of those who died from COVID in 2020 and '21 and ridership apparently still well below pre-COVID levels, NJ Transit I believe was forced to either do this or pass along massive fare increases to regular commuters they likely did not expect to need to when these deals were done in 2018 before COVID hit and even after adjustments in 2023 likely due to not being able to get staff back to pre-COVID levels. |
