Looked much better in its original state, especially the side and end doors. After GOH, they resembled IRT SMEE side and end doors.

I have gotten this correction from a fellow transit enthusiast and CNJ buff about this entry:

"1961 – from The Book of Last Runs

Central Railroad of New Jersey
Reading Railroad

"Today is the last day of operation for the Budd stainless steel train sets on the CRUSADER. The train ran between Jersey City and Reading Terminal, Philadelphia.
"It was jointly operated by the CNJ and the Reading. A notable feature of the train was observation cars at each end to eliminate switching at the terminals.

"Beginning in April the train will operate with Budd RDC cars.

"Source: Brennan, William J, (1993), Jersey Central Lines In Color, Morning Sun Books"

He informs me thus:

"Acually[sic], F-7s and conventional coaches were used on the "CRUSADER" (and the "WALL STREET") until the Aldene Plan shuttered the CNJ ferry terminal at Jersey City in 1967.

"With access to the CNJ's Communipaw turntables no longer available, there was now no longer facilities to turn the engines; this was when both trains became RDC only, until they were later eliminated.

"HOWEVER, prior to 1967, the "CRUSADER" and "WALL STREET" did use RDCs on weekend runs to Jersey City."

Just thought y'all might like to know . . .

Yes, whoever designed and authorized the replacement doors had no sense of proportion or scale. The end-door windows were particularly ugly.

The April 24, 1960 timetable list trains a day between Jersey City and Philly. The Crusader and the Wall Street account for four of these.

Saturday saw two westbounds and three eastbound with the Wall Street making one trip in each direction.

Sunday had three westbounds and four eastbounds. There were no namerd train.

Service was cutback to weekdays only by 1966. The October 30, 1966 timetable lists two trains each way, The Wall Street and The Crusader.

I recall seeing both of these trains at Penn Station Newark post Aldene. They both were running with RDC's by that time..

I measured the side door windows. Their height was a carbon copy of those of the R-32's and R-38's. But their positioning was very much IRT-esque.

Since the R12s in 1948, the rectangular side door windows on the IRT SMEE cars were high up on the door panels, and didn't line up with the car's side windows. This didn't change until 1963 and the R33 World's Fair car, on which the door windows were lowered to line up with the new picture windows. After the Redbird GO, occasionally a door panel with the high window was installed on a World's Fair car, next to a door panel with the correct window. The difference was obvious.

The astute student will note the second car in is R/15 I think with Port hole doors that do line up with the side windows.

A great photo!

From the Book of Last Runs

Service on the five remaining Los Angeles streetcar lines was discontinued. They almost kept the P line, the most heavily patronized route, but it would have meant keeping a lot of nonrevenue trackage open for access to Vernon Yards.

I omitted the R15 because the portholes, which do seem to line up better with the side windows, are such a different design that there's no real continuity between the round windows and the square windows.

The R-15s were victims of discrimination. Even though they had internal door controls, they were still lumped in with the R-12s and R-14s and labeled as, "Queens cars," when they were transferred to the mainlines and were banned from being in the conductor's post.

And as replacements for the rattan seats in the arnines they were very comfortable too. And they didn't snag your pants with sharp rattan points that had stuck up. But they were prone to slashing and other vandalism, and were often repaired temporarily with tape.

Try them yourself in museum car #401:
