Posted by W.B. on Wed Apr 1 18:14:36 2026, in response to Tuscarora Almanac for March 31, posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Mar 31 10:06:04 2026. I have gotten this correction from a fellow transit enthusiast and CNJ buff about this entry:"1961 – from The Book of Last Runs Central Railroad of New Jersey Reading Railroad "Today is the last day of operation for the Budd stainless steel train sets on the CRUSADER. The train ran between Jersey City and Reading Terminal, Philadelphia. "It was jointly operated by the CNJ and the Reading. A notable feature of the train was observation cars at each end to eliminate switching at the terminals. "Beginning in April the train will operate with Budd RDC cars. "Source: Brennan, William J, (1993), Jersey Central Lines In Color, Morning Sun Books" He informs me thus: "Acually[sic], F-7s and conventional coaches were used on the "CRUSADER" (and the "WALL STREET") until the Aldene Plan shuttered the CNJ ferry terminal at Jersey City in 1967. "With access to the CNJ's Communipaw turntables no longer available, there was now no longer facilities to turn the engines; this was when both trains became RDC only, until they were later eliminated. "HOWEVER, prior to 1967, the "CRUSADER" and "WALL STREET" did use RDCs on weekend runs to Jersey City." Just thought y'all might like to know . . . |
