1917 – from The Book of First Runs

The IRT White Plains Road Line is extended from East 219th Street to East 238th Street.


1952 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last full day of service on the Pennsylvania Railroad ferries on the Delaware River between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey. The final crossing was made by the HADDONFIELD in the early hours of April 1, 1952.



1953 – from The Book of Last Runs

The Staten Island Rapid Transit Railway Company discontinues service on the Arlington (North Shore) and South Beach Lines.


1954 – from The Book of Last Runs

The New York Central Railroad discontinues passenger train service on the Catskill Mountain Branch between Kingston and Oneonta, New York.



1961 – from The Book of Last Runs

Reading Railroad

Today is the last day of operation for the Budd stainless steel train sets on the CRUSADER. The train ran between Jersey City and Reading Terminal, Philadelphia.
It was jointly operated by the CNJ and the Reading. A notable feature of the train was observation cars at each end to eliminate switching at the terminals.

Beginning in April the train will operate with Budd RDC cars.

1976 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operations for the Lehigh & Hudson River Railroad. The final run is made by train NE-3 with Alco C-420 23 and 24. Effective on April 1 Conrail will take over the railroad and it will be known as the “Hudson Branch”.


1977 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operation of the pre-WWII IND cars. The last train ran as a “J” Jamaica-Nassau St Express (BMT Rt. 15). It left from 168 Street-Jamaica at 8:01 AM and arrived at Broad Street at 8:55AM. The consist was
(S) R-9 1676, 1683, R-7 1416, R-9 1693, R-7A 1584, R-9 1654, R-7 1497,
R-6 1398 x R-4 722).


1988 – from The Book of First Runs

The first train of rebuilt R-42’s enter service on the “J” line. The consist is (n) 4915-14, 4949-48, 4844-45, and 4910-11.




1990 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operation of Rail Diesel Cars (RDC's) on the Metro-North Lines west of the Hudson.
