"Yes, terminating before age 55 can hurt your pension,"You just answered your own question. If your being fired, obviously there has to be a cause. When Terminated at Metro-North, you forfeit your pension, period (if you have a pension to begin with. Most employees nowadays have a 401K or some other retirement funds). But you will retain your RRT benefits. That's why when they want to get rid of you, in 99% of the cases I've seen, they give you the option to resign. |

When Terminated at Metro-North, you forfeit your pensionThat is totally false. A vested pension cannot be terminated except maybe for the commission of a work-related crime. The worst that can happen is that you lose the special early retirement benefits that you would have been entitled to if you'd stuck it out to age 55 or some similar age. But that doesn't distinguish between quitting and being fired. I agree that maybe they told him that he would be fired if he didn't quit. |

"...vested pension cannot be terminated except maybe for the commission of a work-related crime."Total nonsense. Committing a dismissal offense has nothing to do with being vested or not. Having one year or 20 years, if you get caught stealing, fighting on company time or property, substance abuse & insubordination, absenteeism are a few examples of what will get you fired. These were all worked out in various collective bargaining agreements agreed to over the years with all the unions. Those examples I cite (with the possible exception of stealing) are examples of a non "work related crime " I see you never worked in a union shop before. I was an assistant general chairman of one of the OT&E (other than train & engine) unions & I know of what I speak. |

I stopped replying to him and types like him a while ago here and online not worth my time. |

You misread what I wrote.Of course you can have employment terminated for lots of stuff other than a crime. You can't have your pension terminated for anything other than a crime, and even then it's very rare. |

I see you never worked in a union shop before. In fact, I have. Over the course of my life I've been employed under a collective bargaining agreement as a dues-paying member of three different unions. |

I was writing about pensions, not about possible causes of getting fired. If you aren't "vested" in the pension plan and get fired... You aren't getting a pension... So yes that can happen. |

"You can't have your pension terminated for anything..."Thats just wrong. If the individual gets terminated the pension gets "terminated" (aka loses) with him/her. Also, With the railroad, you are considered "vested" after 10 years of continuous service. If you resign with less than 10 years, any pension funds that accrued will also be forfeited. |

Of course, if you lose your job, you don't get any future benefits. You also lose special things like improved early retirement benefits. I said all of that. And I also restricted my comments to those who are vested. |
