You just answered your own question. If your being fired, obviously there has to be a cause. When Terminated at Metro-North, you forfeit your pension, period (if you have a pension to begin with. Most employees nowadays have a 401K or some other retirement funds). But you will retain your RRT benefits.
That's why when they want to get rid of you, in 99% of the cases I've seen, they give you the option to resign.
